The Lotterys Plus One
Reviews

The Lotterys Plus One by Emma Donoghue is a Canadian middle grade fiction story about blended families, family acceptance, and dementia. It's told from the point of view of Sumac, a nine year old girl who has to give up her perfect first story floor bedroom to PopCorn's Dad, whom she nicknames Grumps because he is racist and homophobic and is now living in a home with two dads, two moms, and large family of multi-ethnic kids, some biological and some adopted. http://pussreboots.com/blog/2017/comm...

Fun topsy-turvey family story with diversity at its center and an all too real conflict to resolve when an ailing and alienated grandfather enters the picture. The geography of the huge brick house they call Camelottery in Toronto creates an almost magical world full of special nicknames and word play. It is refreshing to read a story that celebrates all kinds of families, transracial adoption and the belief that love is love, and I look forward to reading the sequel The Lotterys More or Less. And the illustrations are quirky and warm and perfect, providing a lovely character map every so often punctuating the text and bringing the pieces together in large, intricate group settings.
