I felt much despair throughout the book and would need to look for the historical influences on the text. However, for the first Moomin book it set quite a tone for the characters moving forward.

(3.5) While I enjoyed this and I plan to read more of the Moomin books, it is clearly intended for children. That's not to say it's bad, it is really quite good for its genre, it's just that it's written for an audience of which I'm not a part. I would read it to a kid though, and I look toward to reading more of Jansson.
