In 1896, veterinarian Dr. Samuel K. Johnson had no idea that his simple act of kindness to a grieving pet owner would result in the creation of America's first and greatest pet cemetery. The "Peaceable Kingdom," as Hartsdale Pet Cemetery has come to be known, today enjoys international recognition and is listed as a place of national historic significance by the U.S. Department of the Interior.Author Edward C. MARTIN, III is the Vice President of Hartsdale Pet Cemetery. Raised in Bronxville, New York, he is the eldest son of cemetery Director Edward C. Martin, Jr. The author's association with the cemetery spans over thirty years, from his teen years when he worked summers in the cemetery cutting grass and planting flowers. Edward received a law degree from Pace Law School, and after a successful career at Price Waterhouse he returned to his roots at the Peaceable Kingdom. Today he lives in Bronxville with his wife, Candace, his two daughters, Lilly and Charlotte, and his pets Violet, a rescued spaniel-mix and two guinea pigs named George and Hunny Bunny.
