Terrifying and heartbreaking, but I couldn’t look away. This book gave me nightmares and yet there was something so pure and light about the man and his son. A book I would recommend to others, just not before bedtime.

Set in an unnamed future after a undescribed apocalyptic event, a father and son wander dangerous highways en route to the sea, fighting fatigue, starvation, the elements and fellow survivors. Despite it's dystopian/sci-fi overtones, the story is really about family, survival, desperation, and the power (and pitfalls) of hope. It's a thrilling read in approachable prose, and it lingers with you.

McCarthy novels always seem to me like they’re taking place 100 years on the past somehow. Even when they’re roughly modern there’s an antiquity to his language and whatnot that screams of olden days. 

Dropping into this in media res, a clearly modern landscape charred by some unclear but surely man made disaster the narrow scope of the story telling is remarkably gripping. It is the sparest and most direct human drama he’s done, maybe? 

I don’t like playing that card, but also: reading as a dad is a whole other level of gutting.

Görünürde, belirsiz bir felaket sonrası yok olan eski dünyanın kalıntıları arasında güneye, denize ulaşmaya çalışan baba oğulun öyküsünü anlatıyor. McCarthy, kıyamet sonrası dönemin atmosferini, anlatıda yaşananlar gibi soğumuş, tedirgin, umudunu tüketmiş bir üslûpla, kül tadıyla yansıtıyor. Romanın izleği olan ebeveynlerin çocuklarına dair temel korkusunun yanı sıra din, neo-liberalizm gibi meseleleri anlatının içine nasıl gömdüğünden, McCarthy’nin diğer kitapları arasında durduğu farklı yerden bahsetmeye çalışacağım.

İnancın kalmadığı bir dünyada umuda hacılığın hikâyesi.

Baba oğulun izlemeleri gereken bir yol var. Bir çift mermisi kalmış bir tabanca, bir market arabası, ayaklarında lime lime olmuş pabuçları hariç pek bir eşyaları yok. Beslenmek, barınmak için bazen yoldan uzaklaşmalılar. Her adımın bin bir zorlukla atılması bir yana, tarifsiz tehlikelere, bilinmezliğe doğru, yaşamı itmeyi sürdürmek için, parçalanmayı biraz olsun duraklatmak için. Yine, eski dünyanın alışkanlıkları, varlığımızdan gelen o çelişkiler, dilsizlikte ısrar eden yeni düzenin dehşetine rağmen ortaya çıkan benzer sorular baba ile oğlanı zaman zaman, sıklıkla farklı ruh hâllerine, düşüncelere sürüklüyor. Zamanın bile çok anlamlı olmadığı, günlerin akıl almaz biçimde kısaldığı bu doğal olmayan yolculukta, baba oğlanın sözcüklerini duymak için büyük çaba gösteriyor. Yalvarıyor, şaka yapıyor, kendisiyle konuşması için ikna etmeye çalışıyor. Yol boyunca tarifi zor anlar yaşanıyor. Bu yüzden yine sözcüklere dönüyorlar, çünkü yeryüzünün nicedir kendisi olmayan bu kalıntısında dahi, gördüklerimizi, hissettiklerimizi anlatmak için en son âna dek sözcükler ya da sözcüklere benzer sesler dışında bir yol yok.

Semavi dinlerin hikâyesinde tek anlatıcı, iki kahraman var. İyi ile kötü. Anlatıda nihai biçimde çatışmaları zirveye ulaşacak. Bu kaçınılmaz, bir şekilde anlatının kendini sürekli, görünür, inandırıcı kılmasının dayanağı. Bu çatışmadan kıyamet kopacak. Felaketin ne olduğu belirsiz. Hava kirli, havada, karada, suda yaşam belirtisi yok. Yağmur güçlü, rüzgâr soğuk. Her şeyin üzerinde bir kül tabakası. Zehir soluyor olabilirler, baba sürekli öksürüp kan tükürüyor. Bir yerde biyolojik korunma kıyafetleri giymiş biri de beliriyor. Okur da, baba oğul sağ kalmaya çalışırken, çaresizce kıyamete neyin yol açtığını anlamaya çalışıyor. Yersizleşmiş, yurtsuzlaşmış karakterler bir yerlerde kamp yapmaya çalışırken, sürekli kendilerine alan açmaya çalışıyorlar. Toprakta bir parça kazıp yerleşmeye, bedenlerinin bir kısmını oraya gömmeye. İnatla dünyaya saplanıp kalmaya çalışıyorlar. Artık dostane bir yanı kalmamış doğanın zihinlerinde kalmış hatırasında anlam bulma çabaları. Gerçeklikle ilişkinin tehlikeli anlar haricinde zayıflaması, ucunda ölüm olmadıkça görünen bir şeyin öneminin artık kalmaması. Düşüncelerin bu yüzden kalın bir ip gibi sarması, hatırlananların dahi gerçekliğinin giderek silik mırıltılara dönüşmesi.

Yine de içlerinde bir yerde, saklı kalmış bir virüs gibi, anlatma isteği, yaşadıklarını, silinip giden dünyayı anlatma isteği sönmüyor. Baba ısrarla anlatacak, dinleyecek bir hikâye peşine düşüyor, en zor anda, yarı donmuş hâlde geceyi atlatmaya çalışırlarken. Çünkü hikâye anlatmak, dili kullanmak hâlâ insana dair elde kalmış son varoluş biçimi. Hikâyelerimizi dinleyecek kimse olmasa da oğlan kimi zaman dinlemeyi, anlatmayı reddediyor, kimi zaman uyuyakalmış oluyor. O zaman kendimize anlatırız, bir yerlerde dinlediğini düşündüğümüz Tanrı’ya. Tanrı ise, dünyadan çekilmiştir. O zaman tekrar bir Tanrı yaratırız, en yakınımızda gördüğümüzden. Oğlumuzdan bir Tanrı fikri yaratır, onu yine hissederiz, eski alışkanlıkları sürdürür, yalan söylemeye devam ederiz. Ona nefes verip yarat ve sevgi sözcükleriyle devam etsin diye kandır. Tanrıyı dahi ikame edebiliriz, hikâyelerle oğullarımız hariç her şeyin yerine başkasını getirebiliriz.

Adam da böyle yapıyor. Sıklıkla oğluna ateşi hatırlatıyor. Oğluna, anlamını kavrayamasa da, ateşi taşıyanlar olduklarına ikna ediyor. Tekrarlamasın istiyor. Bir peygambere inen vahiy gibi, ateşi taşıdığını yüksek sesle tekrarla, böylece buna inan. Kitapta ateş belirleyici bir imge. Yeryüzü alevler içinde, ateş her yerde, hangisinin iyi, hangisini kötü olduğu arasındaki anlamı çoktan yitirmişiz. Baba bu bağlamda Prometheus, ateş hırsızı mıdır? Oğluna karşı öyle görünse de, kendisiyle, yine oğlu yüzünden, sıklıkla doğruyu tartışır. Derin inançsızlığını acıyla kabullenir yer yer. Çünkü oğlu sıklıkla kendisini sorgular. Nasıl iyi insanlar sadece onlardır? Bu nasıl mümkündür? Oğlu kuşkusuz ilahi kanon dışında, kendilerini iyi olarak tanımlarken, nasıl kimi zaman gayet kötülerden farksız davrandıklarını sorgular. Aralarındaki çatışma körüklenir. Uzun suskunluklar belirir, hikâyelerin, sözcüklerin yetersizlikleri görünür.

Ateşi çalıp oğluna vermiştir, evet. Belki de bu yüzden yolun sonuna doğru mücadele ivmesi bir noktaya dek artar babanın. Oğlu yeni bir dinin ilk temsilcisidir, yamyamlara barbarlara karşı, çökmüş gitmiş, işlevini yitirmiş inançların arasında bir etik pusula. Bu yüzden kir pas içindeki oğlunun saçlarını okşarken, ne denli güzel olduğunu düşünür, Dedi ki: oğlan Tanrının sözü değilse, Tanrı hiç konuşmamış demektir. Baba yekten analojiyle oğlunu tanrı yerine koymuyor, Tanrı’nın anlatısından elde kalmış ne varsa, sözcükler hâlinde oğlunda belirdiğini, varlığını sürdürdüğünü vurguluyor. İnsan, semavi dinlere göre konuşan değildir ne de de olsa, daha çok dinleyen, kendisine konuşulan, kimi zaman konuşmanın kendisi şeklinde mevcuttur.

Babanın karşılarına çıkan herkesi büyük bir tehlike görmesine rağmen, karşılarına çıkan, ismini öğrendiğimiz tek karakterle uzun denebilecek şekilde yaptığı konuşma ilginçtir. Ely, İlyas, isimli bu yaşlı ve neredeyse kör adam, ki adının sahte olduğunu da söyler laf arasında, dünyanın üzerindekilerle silinmesi gerektiğini söyleyen bir felaket tellalıdır. Zaten kıyamet kopmuşken, baba bu böylesi şüpheci bir adama dahi umut aşılamaya çalışır. Oğlunda ilahi bazı şeyler olduğunu iddia edince, yaşlı adamın cevabı kapkara komiktir. Çünkü bu yolda hele de yanında tanrıyla yürüyorsan, yolun sonunun iyi bir yere varmayacağı aşikârdır. Çünkü tanrıya yer yoktur artık, ama biz onun peygamberleriyiz, burası kesindir. As my second Cormac book (other being "Blood Meridian"), I was slightly disappointed by this not being quite as poetic in diction. In the end, it made for simpler reading to better focus on the two characters and their story rather than create a painting with each line.
 
Obviously "The Road" is quite grim. The world is over and there's seemingly no hope for a return to it, only what is now and surviving through the night, each night. However, our two characters (who're never named) share a bond that keeps them going. The determination and positivity of the man is truly inspiring. He tells you time and time again that his son is the only thing keeping him going. Perhaps it is true; what is certain is he's the only thing keeping him from becoming evil. Others on the road don't have a reason and thus have descended into cannibalism and madness. It's a disgusting world, yet the man wants the boy to "carry the fire" as long as humanly possible.
 
I loved this book. The moments of happiness are as high as the sadness is low. I think this was the first time in a long time a book made me cry and had me physically struggling to read the last two pages through tears. Cormac McCarthy knew damn well that life is all encompassing, the beauty and the pain are inseparable. I'd have loved to have shaken his hand.
 
I highly recommend "The Road".

Empty and more than a little pretentious. 

There's the seed of a good plot here, but that's all there is. This is not a novel; it's an empty sketch of one. The apocalypse setting is never explained or defined and rarely even alluded to. The dialogue is hands-down the worst I've ever read. It's like listening to two Siri apps talk to each other. 

There are some interesting imagery, but its undercut by the clunky writing. Mccarthy seems intent on writing in mostly sentence fragments or confusingly structured sentences. He also inexplicably omits commas and apostrophes when he feels like it. It took more effort to take these out than it did to put them in, and what purpose does their absence serve besides annoying the reader? This seems like it was written by a particularly pretentious and unimaginative ninth-grader who got mostly C's in English class.

There is absolutely no plot to speak of, the nameless characters just wander around Nowheresville, USA, occasionally running into cannibals or insane old men, but most of the time, no one. I found it unbelievable that they never run into any animals. It would be much more interesting to see the characters try to catch fish or hunt rabbits rather than stumble upon a storehouse full of canned beans. 

There's not much else to say here. This is the most overblown and overrated novel I've read in a long time. If this tripe was written by any other author, it would be sent to the trash bin, but since this is a famous author he gets Oprah awards. This had the potential to be something great, but it's just so lazy. This is a book that substitutes characterization, character growth, plot, and setting for little bunches of pretty, shallow description.

Read this after seeing Neil Druckmann speak about it as an inspiration for The Last of Us.

I first read this book several years ago, as my first taste of McCarthy, and loved it. Now, after having read his entire bibliography (in roughly reverse chronological order), I revisited this great novel. It's interesting to recognize parts of his earlier works in this; it feels like a distilled version of McCarthy's writing, a culmination of his themes and prose. Even less plot than in his other books, fewer characters (and none named), even sparser prose and more powerful language. It's not his most gruesome story, but it's his bleakest and most desperate (among many other bleak and desperate ones like Blood Meridian. The overarching themes of redemption and perseverance in the face of strife from novels like Outer Dark are even starker.

ugh. super tedious and boring. not my thing at all stylistically or genre-wise. felt like i was playing a dumb video game that i would have given up on out of boredom (though in the book's defense, those video games probably take massive cues from this). felt like it was too edgy for its own good, and while there are obviously good ideas under the hood, it just was too jarring to get through personally. this is my second time attempting to read this book and i really had to just force myself to power through it this time

A very mellow book with bleak writing. I cried at the end. Wish there was a bit info, and backstory (?) on the cannibals and the pregnant woman. Keeping it on the bookshelf.

This is probably the bleakest book I've ever read. The fact that it is being made into a motion picture is completely astounding to me. I have no idea how anyone considers this a great book, much less a masterpiece.

Wow, talk about dark! This book is dark with a capital D . I read No Country for Old Men and loved it - I loved this one just as much, but it is a bit depressing.

This book is good but I don’t think I would put it as one of the best books I’ve read. I read this book for my English class this tri and my teacher claims it is one of his top 5 favorite books because it’s so great. I just feel like the story arc is a little predictable. They’d walk a little bit, get lucky, that would last for a couple pages then they would be on the move and almost die again. I also didn’t like the fact there was no connection created between me and the book. It simply felt like I was reading words and not an actual story. I do think the story had potential but not the way it’s written here.

atmospheric and i do love myself a good depressed father who has to take care of their child. but i got so bored and the dialogue was so drab and repetitive that I stopped really caring after a little while.
