If you're looking for a good graphic novel with a dark twist, look no further. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the story line was incredible and unlike any other graphic novel I've read before. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, even those who are new to graphic novels.

Even if the book is humongous it's ridiculously fast paced! The story was beautiful and it took a turn at the end i Didnt expected, still u knew what would happened at the end! 

I also loved the colours, it was white, grey, black and blue shades throughout the book! 

Not the best graphic Novel i've read but definitely top 3!

"The Sculptor" (2015) é a primeira grande obra de ficção de Scott McCloud, que apesar de ter tido uma breve passagem pela ficção nos anos 1980 se tornou, ao longo das últimas três décadas, no mais respeitado teórico do meio de banda desenhada (BD). Autor de três obras obrigatórias para quem quer que pretenda estudar o meio — "Understanding Comics" (1993), "Reinventing Comics" (2000), e "Making Comics" (2006) —, palestrante nas mais reputadas empresas internacionais, desde a TED Global à Google e Pixar, assim como universidades, do MIT a Stanford, ganhador de imensos prémios por todo o seu trabalho de desconstrução da BD. McCloud é não apenas reconhecido pelo seu trabalho, mas também por tudo o que deu à banda desenhada no modo como tem contribuído para a afirmação da mesma fora do seu próprio nicho. Por tudo isto, uma obra sua de ficção não poderia deixar de ser recebida com gigantescas expectativas. O que é que o maior teórico do meio teria para nos oferecer? Demorei a lê-lo, apesar de o ter comprado quando saiu, muito porque percebi que as expectativas estavam demasiado altas, e as primeiras resenhas davam conta do gorar das mesmas. Li-o agora, passados três anos e já sem expectativas, posso dizer que cumpre, mas talvez porque me tenha interessado mais em compreender a diferença entre o professor e o criador.

Os três livros de não-ficção de Scott McCloud

Sobre o livro em si, apenas breves notas. No aspeto formal, McCloud nada arrisca, cumpre com o que de mais conservador podemos ter no meio, o que é em parte uma das grandes decepções da obra, tendo em conta tudo o que sempre defendeu quanto à renovação da BD. No campo das ideias McCloud não surpreende, mas leva-nos consigo, dá-nos a mão e deixa-nos ver o seu mundo, colocando no papel muito de si, do seu íntimo e do seu mundo. Os seus desaires, ânsias, desejos, medos e vertigens estão ali bem plasmados. Será fácil aos criadores, de qualquer arte, reverem-se no personagem principal, e o mais interessante é que apesar de nos apresentar o drama do criador artístico, McCloud foge totalmente ao cânone dos seus objetivos, algo que se liga claramente à sua concepção do mundo, e se podendo parecer vazio em certos momentos, acaba sendo o mais brilhante e relevante de todo o livro pela sua originalidade. E no entanto, apesar de conseguir criar algo particularmente interessante, não deixa de apresentar um trabalho com imensas fragilidades, nomeadamente no campo do storytelling, mesmo seguindo uma fórmula conservadora para o fazer, o que acaba sendo uma decepção.

George Bernard Shaw cunhou uma das frases mais célebres da história sobre os teóricos e professores, "Quem pode, faz. Quem não pode, ensina." (1903), e que acabou passando a provérbio sob a forma ligeiramente adulterada: "Quem sabe, faz. Quem não sabe, ensina.". Esta visão da realidade poderia ser aqui facilmente evocada, já que McCloud apesar de reconhecido como um grande professor de BD, parece não conseguir depois na prática dar asas àquilo que define e defende quando passa ao ato de criar. Será então McCloud, e a grande maioria dos professores, como eu, meros frustrados das profissões de que falam? Mas como é que alguém que se torna respeitado mundialmente pela forma como desconstrói uma arte pode "não poder" ou "não saber" dessa arte? 

A resposta encontrei-a num outro provérbio, de autor anónimo, apesar de erradamente surgir na net associado a Aristóteles: "Quem sabe, faz. Quem compreende, ensina.". E é exatamente isto, é absolutamente isto que temos em McCloud, alguém que compreende o meio como nenhum outro, não faz, antes ensina a fazer. Claro que isto não resolve a questão, porque se compreende como pode não saber?

Para responder a isto tenho de ir um outro conceito, o do "conhecimento tácito", definido por Michael Polanyi em 1958, que nos diz que "podemos saber mais do que aquilo que podemos dizer", e desse modo defende que existe muito conhecimento que não pode ser descrito, ou ensinado de forma alternativa à mímica, experiência e tentativa e erro. Os exemplos clássicos são o andar de bicicleta, tocar piano ou simplesmente martelar um prego. Estes casos envolvem competências que não podem ser aprendidas através da escrita ou qualquer meio que não seja a experiência concreta das suas ações. O processo de aprendizagem decorre por meio da incorporação somática, e uma vez apreendido não se torna por isso mais fácil de explicar.

E é isto que aqui temos. Na verdade não é possível explicar ou ensinar, de forma explícita, o processo criativo por detrás de qualquer arte. O que se pode fazer é abrir janelas para esse processo, nomeadamente desconstruir o processo, as suas perspectivas, os conceitos e objetivos, o resto advém pelo fazer, imitando e experimentando. Não estou a dizer que não se podem treinar pessoas, claro que podem, é isso que fazem os professores de instrumento musical, os treinadores de qualquer desporto, ou aquilo que os antigos mestres faziam nas guildas de cada profissão. Mas estes não fazem discursos sobre as qualidades do desporto ou instrumento, estes mostram como fazer, e atuam modelando o fazer com indicações diretas sobre a ação, em busca do que consideram o caminho a seguir. Tudo isto é limitado à ação, mas no mundo complexo de hoje não chega agir, a não ser que se seja uma estrela incontestável, é preciso compreender a ação e a razão da mesma, é preciso elaborar sobre a mesma, é preciso competências reflexivas sobre o meio em que se trabalha. Um artista não vive do que faz, vive do que consegue vender. Por isso precisa de aprender mais do que a simplesmente fazer, precisa de se compreender a si e aos outros, e para isso precisa de compreender aquilo que faz.

Ora para compreender aquilo que se faz não chega ter treinadores, são precisos professores, pessoas capazes de desconstruir a ação em blocos de informação e de exprimi-los num modo que seja entendida pelos outros. Não é alguém excelente a fazer, para o ser teria de dedicar todo o tempo a fazer em vez de passar todo o tempo a tentar compreender. No fundo, o professor tem de ser alguém excelente a desconstruir a realidade e a transformá-la em algo a que todos os outros possam mais facilmente aceder. O professor abre novas janelas sobre o trabalho dos outros ajudando todos os envolvidos a compreenderem melhor o que fazem e porque o fazem. É este o papel do professor, é isto que McCloud faz de modo brilhante nos seus livros de não-ficção.

Para terminar, e porque me envolvi pessoalmente acima no texto, tenho de deixar a minha visão particular do tema. Cresci a amar cinema, via muitas horas, entre os 12 e os 15 anos, passei fins-de-semana completos encerrado em salas de vídeo a ver filmes, em cada fim-de-semana conseguia ver entre 5 a 10 novos filmes, ao que se acrescentavam os 2 filmes semanais em sala de cinema. Antes de ter condições para começar a fazer cinema, comecei a ler sobre cinema, não só as revistas da altura — Premiere e Cahiers du Cinema, etc. — mas também obras de teóricos da arte — Mitry, Bazin, Sadoul, Metz, Henri Agel, Eduardo Geada, etc. Quando finalmente tive a minha primeira câmara pelos 17/18 anos fiz muitas experiências, mais tarde cheguei a fazer alguns filmes com colegas, mas quando olhava para trás, nada do que tinha feito me satisfazia (algumas obras ainda estão online). Preferia as obras dos meus colegas, sentia que eles eram melhores que eu. Eu sabia o que queria, tinha a noção teórica do que queria criar, mas não chegava lá. Hoje sei que não chegava lá porque precisava de ter experimentado mais, fazer, fazer, fazer, mas também sei que aquilo que falhou foi precisamente a motivação para continuar a fazer. O que eu gostava verdadeiramente era de desconstruir as obras, de as desagregar em elementos, de as autopsiar em busca de respostas e razões para o que de novo e original cada autor conseguia apresentar. Apreciar o modo como conseguiam reinventar-se a cada nova obra, como conseguiam superar os limites estabelecidos e surpreender-nos, tentar compreender como isso contribuía para a criação de novas formas de fazer, novas formas de compreender a realidade, novas formas de dar significado ao que somos. Porque a criação artística não é mero ato criativo, no meu modo pessoal de encarar a arte, a criação objetiva sempre à expressão humana, e fazê-lo de um modo diferente implica abrir novas potencialidades expressivas ao ser humano. Por isso sempre me movi pela compreensão do processo criativo e seus aspetos de inovação e originalidade, e talvez por isto tenha acabado por me tornar professor e não cineasta!

I have complicated feelings about Scott McCloud’s The Sculptor. I very rapidly became immersed in the narrative, so much so that I blew through 200 pages while standing around in a store. However, despite the ease at which I devoured the book, it wasn’t wholly satisfying as McCloud relies too heavily on overused tropes and fails to rise above what other writers have done, often better, before.

The Sculptor follows David, an artist who is desperately trying to make his mark on the world. He was once noticed and supported, but he burned many bridges and is now wallowing in obscurity. He’s drinking away his last remaining cash when his favourite uncle appears and tries to convince him that life is still worth living. However, his favourite uncle is dead and this being is really Death himself, come to make a terrible deal with David. He will give David the ability to sculpt anything he wants in exchange for shortening his life to only 200 days. David wants nothing more than to be special and remembered, so he agrees and spends the rest of the novel trying to become a successful artist. Unfortunately for him, even with magical powers, what he wants often seems out of grasp, sending him spiralling into a period of depression and self-harm until he meets Meg. This is where everything starts to derail for me. Meg is also an artist trying to make it in the big city, and she is full of life and exuberance in comparison to David’s sullen angst. In short, she’s a “Magic Pixie Dream Girl”, a female character whose sole purpose is to fulfil a male character. She and David met when he was (unknowingly) accosted by a troupe of street performers and Meg flies out of the sky on angel wings to tell him that life will be okay, causing David to fall in love with her. As readers get to know Meg, we find out that she is trying to become a Broadway actress, she loves taking risks, eating strange food, helping hapless strangers, and making men fall in love with her. She has extreme highs, but also terrible lows (as the book implies that she suffers from what I assume is untreated bipolar disorder). She exists not to have a story of her own, but to inspire David and teach him that his singular and isolating obsession with fame and immortality through art is perhaps misguided. They have a conflictual relationship, but the book ends with her trying to convince David to move out of the city and start a family with her elsewhere, away from big dreams of fame and infamy. But, of course, she dies before David does, causing him to lash out in pain, producing a final, gigantic piece of art as a testament to his love for her and the life that they will never have.
 
Despite how easy the story was to consume, The Sculptor is something I’ve read before multiple times. In particular, the character of Meg irked me as she never really got to shine as her own person, and it is frustrating when women are used only as inspiration or object lessons for male characters. Meg could have been an interesting character, but her development is shallow and focused only on the parts that David likes or needs to experience for his own growth. As such, she ends up being a stereotype, and this lack of depth weakens the climax of the book. In the past chapter of The Sculptor, Meg unexpectedly becomes pregnant. She encourages David to move out of the city and start a family with her as she greatly wants a baby, a desire that seems to come out of nowhere. When she dies shortly after, David erects a giant statue of her holding a child. However, the familial emotions of the scene feel unearned. It is understandable that David would want a family as his parents and sister have passed away, but Meg’s sudden shift in focus isn’t grounded in anything the readers have experienced about her. The plot twist feels inorganic and done solely to drive David to greater expressions of creation.
 
Relatedly, David’s journey lacks depth. He’s young and angry, but he never really grows past his overwhelming emotions. He doesn’t seem to understand himself or his choices any better at the end of his 200 days, and readers are left wondering what exactly McCloud is trying to say about creation. Not that open-ended books can’t be fantastic and thought-provoking, this one just felt too fatalistic and simple for my tastes. 

If the story was so blasé, why did I spend over $30 on the book? Honestly, McCloud knows know to pace his readers, and the narrative is quite engaging. You cannot help but want to see whether David stops being such a foolish, messed up person, and whether his Faustian deal will end in death. Also, the art is fantastic. McCloud’s style leans towards cartoonish, but the simplicity of his figures still allows him to invoke a wide range of emotions. The backgrounds are superbly done, cementing the feeling that the story is occurring in an actual place, something not all graphic novels succeed at doing. Even if the story was on the bland side, the book is still captivating and worth picking up for the art alone. 

In the end, The Sculptor was a worthwhile read. I am glad that I bought it, and I will probably read it again. However, I feel that if one is looking for a story about a 20-something trying to find their place in the world and getting mixed up in some paranormal complications, Bryan O’Malley’s Seconds is vastly superior to The Sculptor. Seconds feels more honest about the flaws of its protagonist, and really makes her work to learn and grow (rather than go out in a blaze of glory). Furthermore, the nature of the paranormal influence (a house spirit) is much more creative and far less fatalistic than the Faustian Devil employed by McCloud. The Sculptor will probably become part of the literary graphic novel canon because it does truly excel in many aspects; just don’t expect it to be a masterpiece of innovation.

A messy story about life, with a slight supernatural bent. You've got David, an artist willing to die for his art. And you've got Meg, an optimist and probably better person than you'll ever be. It's fun to see these characters enjoy life, you feel for David's frustrations about finding recognition/fame/acknowledgement/approval/profit for his art. You'll enjoy Meg being amazing, even when you realize she's only human and has her dark side as well.

You'll finish this book, and you'll read the author's notes at the end. And then maybe you'll think about your life for a bit and what that means.

I am a Scott McCloud fan especially his comics about comics. I guess I was expecting too much of this, the art is wonderful and what McCloud is trying to do is very interesting but he never executes probably. The main protagonist is not relatable or interesting and meg is very one dimensional. They almost hit on some interesting themes many times but never actually spend time getting into it. 

It seems more like a good book that shows a lot of promise and talent from a new writer, but I expect better from someone as established as McCloud. Actually, if it was just some random unknown author and this was his/her first book I would be more inclined to give it 4 stars.

This was a pretty heavy graphic novel, and by that I don't just mean that this is the longest one I've read so far. Although, that is absolutely true. This thing is a tome. What's inside it though, is a story with a lot of emotion. The Sculptor doesn't take itself lightly and, if this is on your reading list, you'll want to be prepared.
 
David Smith, a man with a name that could get lost in a crowd of similarly named people, simply wants to show his art to the world. There's a lot of good stuff in here about creating art, who it is created for, and whether it matters how much of an impact it makes on the world. This is the portrait of an artist who feels he has failed. Who knows that he has the capability, and wants his shot so badly that he's willing to give up everything. Even his life.
 
Cue our female lead, and the reason that David's whole planned out deal falls into disarray. Meg is the exact opposite of David. Compulsive, carefree, and living life with her whole heart on her sleeve. What ends up happening between them isn't always pretty. It's real life, and that's why it's so important to see that on a page. We love romance, we love happy endings, but sometimes we forget the things that happen in between all of that,
 
These panels are perfection, too. The art that David creates comes to life on the page. His city, the one filled with thousands of nameless people, stretches across full page spreads and looms over everything. I admit I'm pretty biased, because I love Scott McCloud, but that doesn't change the fact that this graphic novel is excellent.
