In 1715 Kat is the world's only woman officer aboard a ship of war. She is caught up in a dangerous global competition while confronting the many hazards and hardships during the age of sail. After treaties ended the War of Spanish Succession, peace remains tenuous as the European powers race to secure territories and resources in the Americas. Kat's secret mission is to deliver 200 women to St. Eustatius, an island in the Caribbean. She will rely on all of her experience and guile to overcome obstacles challenging her mission, which is threatened by the forces of nature, man and sorcery.Kat is middle-aged and the sole woman on a ship of men. She has bested all of them in seamanship and her expertise with a sword. However, the scars of her past, and her obsession with preserving her aura of command has driven her to suppress all traces of her femininity and to recoil from intimacies and budding romantic relationships.
