The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and other stories

Why has the mild mannered Dr Jekyll suddenly begun to associate with the ugly and violent Mr Hyde? And why are they never seen together? When Jekyll’s old friend Utterson tries to solve these mysteries he uncovers a horrific story of suffering and brutality that eventually leads to the terrible revelation of Mr Hyde’s true identity. Accompanied here by three other memorable stories of horror, murder and the supernatural, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic literature by Robert Louis Stevenson, and one of the most potent and enduring of modern myths. This beautiful edition of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde & Other Stories features an afterword by playwright and screenwriter Peter Harness. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector’s Library is a series of beautifully bound gift editions of much loved classic titles.

It was a somewhat shorter book than I expected but I thought overall it was pretty good.

I don’t think I would read it again but I’m glad that now I know the story and I think that more than the actual story itself and the events, I really like the symbolism of it and the message behind the story.

I would recommend reading it if you haven’t before but I would say that it’s a quick and easy read and probably not something super intense or interesting as books from a similar genre tend to be.

Quite straight forward theme, duality of man. Good and evil within each of us. Yin and Yang. I also wonder if Hyde's last name is a play of "hide", as in the hidden dark side, or I'm just looking way too much into it. Would be cool tho.

I really wanted to read this because of things I learned in my literature class. I liked the story and the ideas behind it

Wasn't the best, my favorite story from the collection was "The Body Snatcher". I think this one was worth 5 stars but overall 3.5/5.

Well worth the price of admission for "A Lodging" and "The Young Man With The Cream Tarts" alone, both of which belong on the highest shelf of the short-story cabinet.

I enjoyed these stories a lot more than I was expecting. I think Dr Jekyll and the Body Snatcher were my two favorites. 4 out of 5 stars.

Here then, as I lay down the pen and proceed to seal up my confession, I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end.

Page 70

I like that this is a metaphor in the sense that he’s dying to another body (that of Mr Hyde) but also in the sense that the book is ending and he only lives as a character with Stevensons novel so his life is literally ending too.

It’s somewhat ironic too that his unhappiness was caused by his own doing in the search of something more exciting in life
