The Wee Free Men
Reviews

Do you ever read a book and wish you'd read it at a different point in your life? That's how I felt about this book. I've been told to read Pratchett for years and years just to discover that I should've read it when I was fourteen. This story follows a young girl named Tiffany Aching who wants to become a witch and becomes one not necessarily by magic, but by how she acts with what she has. It's so very similar to stories I read when I wan younger, and fervently believe that if I'd read it as a teenager, I would've been obsessed with it. Since I'm writing this review almost a year after I first read the book, I wonder if maybe rereading it now would give me the same history with the book as having read it when I was younger would have? Regardless, I do think it's a good book, and I do still intend to finish the series.

One of my favorite books. I love the Nac Mac Feegle.

I listen to this book periodically, for hearts-ease and just for enjoyment. What's interesting is how what I've taken from it has changed over the years. This time through, I was lots more aware of the bits relating to Granny Aching, and Tiffany's thoughts on losing her. That probably has something to do with me being older, I guess. This series is just so fine. I love pretty much all the Pratchett books, but these books are amazing. I come back to them again & again.

If I had read this as a child, I would have loved it immensely. This is the kind of adventure and world that I'd been expecting when I picked up : a strong female heroine, crazy rescue mission, magic and strange characters. Granny Aching sounds like the kind of character I could vibe with for sure, and I see Tiffany growing up to be equally badass, for sure. Now for the title characters, the Nac Mac Feegle's. What a weird, weird bunch of men. Fierce but cowardly, rugged but big hearted all wrapped up in the body of a thief and lush. Not sure what would make this a five star read because I enjoyed it alot, but...there ya go. 4 stars.

This was one of the first fantasy books my dad read to me as a kid and I instantly fell in love with the Discworld and Fantasy as a whole. Re-reading it now was a little slow as knowing the ending kind of took away from the enjoyment. However the writing is as good as Terry Pratchett ever was and no other author will ever have the gift he had nor the humor. Pratchett is a literary treasure and this book is one everyone should read.

if i could write a book with a millionth of the quality of the wee free men, i'd be proud

I haven't read this since I was a child and I'm glad to say it holds up extremely well. Despite being middle grade, I really enjoyed it and found the writing incredible; Terry didn't dumb his style down at all. All the fantasy elements were so beautifully complex in a way that a lot of YA and adult fantasy isn't. It's also really funny! I love the Nac Mac Feegles of course, but the toad especially was a delight I probably didn't find as funny when I was I kid Tiffany was one of my favourite book characters as a child and she still is! I definitely see her in a different way now than then (I would have been her age when I first read it), she's clever in a very realistic way and her emotional journey really connected with me. I especially appreciated the flashback sections about her grandmother, they were so heartfelt and powerful. Definitely a recommended read for anyone, regardless of age

This book was sooooo good! I just finished it and I couldn't be in a better mood. This was such a wholesome and heartwarming read. Exactly what I was looking for. This was my first ever Terry Pratchett book and I loved it so much, so I definitely plan on reading more of his books and for sure I will continue with the Tiffany Aching series. The whole atmosphere of the book was so delightful, plus the unique plot and funny characters made this wonderful read that I recommend to anyone who is looking for a relaxing and magical time.

This has to be one of my favorite "young adult" books I have read. It was actually laugh out loud funny to me at times, and I enjoyed listening to it quite a bit. It's nice too because it blends with the Discworld main story enough to still feel like a Discworld novel, but it builds a world of its own without making much of a fuss. I liked it so much that I queued A Hat Full of Sky to listen to next.
