Thud!

Another brilliant novel in the record-breaking Discworld series. VOTED AS READERS' FAVOURITE DISCWORLD NOVEL IN THE DISCWORLD CUP 2010! 'Some people would be asking: whose side are you on? If you're not for us, you're against us. Huh. If you're not an apple, you're a banana.' When it comes to racial hatred and sectarian violence, the phrase 'vive la difference' is usually one of the furthest from the tip of the mob's tongue. When a whole city is poised on the very brink of anarchy, it only requires one thing to pitch it over the edge. Like the murder of one of the key participants for example.

Pratchett explores blind hatred with such conviction and style, you can't help but wonder if it's the same book that's got flying chariots and pole dancer psychology. Discworld never stops to entertain and fascinate, and in this troubled yet hilarious world of magic, there's a silent reflection of our own.

Commander Sam Vimes is the emotional core of the Discworld series. Other story threads (the witches, Rincewind, etc.) are just as entertaining, but the City Watch stories are the ones that tug at the heart and have the most profound messages. The most recent Watch books - Night Watch and Thud! - are easily some of the best books I have read in recent years. Terry Pratchett just gets better and better the more he writes.

I was listening to the audiobook on my way home from work, and I was gripped by the story. It was equal parts more, politics, and loving Vimes. Definitely worth a read!
