The Bluest Eye A Novel

Toni Morrison2007
Pecola Breedlove, a young eleven-year-old black girl, prays every day for beauty. Mocked by other children for the dark skin, curly hair, and brown eyes that set her apart, she yearns for the blond hair and blue eyes that she believes will allow her to finally fit in. Yet as her dreams grow more fervent, her life slowly starts to disintegrate in the face of adversity and strife. A powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity.--From publisher's description.

"Love is never any better than the lover. Wicked people love wickedly, violent people love violently, weak people love weakly, stupid people love stupidly, but the love of a free man is never safe."

TW: Sexual Assault, Child Sexual Abuse

The writing in this book is absolutely phenomenal. While it’s easy to say this book is centered around one person I think a more apt description is its recognition and understanding of poor Black people. This book is an examination of racism, class, poverty, gender, trauma and so much more. This review is pretty short because I can’t describe anything better than Toni Morrison can. Though this is a heavy read so make sure to avoid it if the subject matter is triggering.
