Tower of Thorns

Disillusioned healer Blackthorn and her companion Grim have settled quietly in Dalriada to wait out the seven years of Blackthorn's bond to her fey mentor. But trouble has a way of seeking out Blackthorn and Grim. Lady Geileis, a noblewoman from the northern border, has asked for the prince of Dalriada's help in expelling a howling creature from an old tower on her land - one surrounded by an impenetrable hedge of thorns. Casting a blight over the entire district, and impossible to drive out by ordinary means, the mysterious presence threatens both the safety and the sanity of all who live nearby. As Blackthorn and Grim begin to put the pieces of the puzzle together, it becomes clear that a powerful adversary is at work. Their quest is about to become a life and death struggle - where even the closest of friends can find themselves on opposite sides.

I didn't think I was going to like this book when I first started it, but then as I got farther in, Juliet Marillier proved herself yet again!! This book seemed to me like a bizarre twist mashup of Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast, and it drew me back to my initial love of Marillier's semi-fairytale retelling in Daughter of the Forest, the beginning of the Sevenwaters series! I absolutely loved this book!!! Creepy, bizarre, mysterious, and beautiful!!!!!

I don't think I've ever read a Juliet Marillier book that I didn't adore. Even this trilogy, a little darker, with a crankier and more imperfect heroic duo, makes me feel like I'm settled in for a brew with friends. The detail in these books makes me feel like I’m reading them for the first time. Like the story that unwinds, Marillier’s books artfully bend the tale this way and that, so that every time you think you remember the ending, another fold is revealed. I never want to feel like I'm reading a Marillier book for the first time. It's only the third or so time I've reading the Blackthorn & Grim books, but just like her Sevenwaters series, I'm mystified and entranced like I'm reading for the first time.
