Tribes

Tribes We need you to lead us

Seth Godin2011
In this fascinating book, Seth Godin argues that now, for the first time, everyone has an opportunity to start a movement - to bring together a tribe of like-minded people and do amazing things. There are tribes everywhere, all of them hungry for connection, meaning and change. And yet, too many people ignore the opportunity to lead, because they are "sheepwalking" their way through their lives and work, too afraid to question whether their compliance is doing them (or their company) any good. This book is for those who don't want to be sheep and instead have a desire to do fresh and exciting work. If you have a passion for what you want to do and the drive to make it happen, there is a tribe of fellow employees, or customers, or investors, or readers, just waiting for you to connect them with each other and lead them where they want to go.

A nice one to finish off a poor second half of 2015 on the reading front. I may have missed the initial wave of shock Godin's book sent through the masses of onlookers, finger pointers, and CEOs who were trembling at the news of their workers venturing through such text; but I feel it just as strongly as anyone did in 2008. The lesson to learn here is simple: everyone has choice to become a leader (an archetypal leader, one who exhibits type-A confidence, charisma and business acumen, for example, is one who isn't born such a way. They've simply made a choice) And the tribe you lead can be small, or big. It doesn't matter. A true leader rises from the likes of a heretic who employs the confidence few do in order to bring observations and visionary ideas to the sheepwalking amongst them. Part self-confidence booster, part anti-Christ to modern day corporation philosophy, I'd recommend Tribes anyone who believes in the power of the small, and the potential of the unexpected.

I wanted to read this in january as my first book of the year but it was really a drag to read it. I just forced myself to finish it so I could return it to the library. I like some of Seth Godin's other work but this one didn't do it for me.

Seth Godin was one of the greatest discoveries for me in 2021, it seems that he always go straight to the point and this book is no the exception. Very useful for everyone that's looking to build a project or personal brand to understand all the influence that we can made with our iniciatives and the power we got at this moment.

I've read about Seth Godin before in blog posts and work conversations however this is my first read of one of his books. I find interesting insights in his words and a simple way to see the world after his analysis, which means he has managed to abstract the essential from the complicated world of leadership and status quo. I got a lot of action items from this. Recommeded!

Too much selling spirit for me... and an impressive lack of substance...

Short book about leadership and role of tribes. Not what I expected, but on the other hand Seth is a marketing guru, so his perspective was very valuable. The book has aged well too. [reading time: 3h32m]

Seth Godin writes great blogs and writes OK books that read like blogs. The ideas in books like Tribe are highly relevant, and important. Yet these ideas crave, and really deserve extended background and detailed examples. Instead they get...a bunch of little blog posts.

Like usual, I just find Seth Godin's writing to be exceptionally clear and to the point. It never fails to have an impact on me and this book has helped me reflect on making a difference in the world. One of the things I love about his writing is that it never belabors the point. The book is tiny, the sections are tiny, and there's just a lot of value in this book. I highly recommend it.
