Kathy Reichs took a break from writing her Temp Brennan novels to recharge with a new character. The first few chapters seemed interested, but the book quickly descends into meh territory. Sunday Night is definitely not Temp, but the character is a stereotypical "tough, but damaged" lady. There's nothing much to her, and without any character development, the long slough through private detective work is pretty boring. Alas... You would think a book about cults and home grown terrorism would be a good beach read, but no...

This is a  new series, I think anyway, by this author. I actually picked this one because I have read and enjoyed all of the Tempe Brennan books. I was expecting something maybe along those lines but I was wrong. Sunday Night is nothing at all what I thought she would be like, which is actually fine and does work well for this book. To say that I loved this new character is wrong, I was not crazy about Sunday Night, I actually liked August "Gus" Night better. Sunday is a bit too much of everything, in my opinion, too angry , too ballsy , too tough acting , she almost comes off as trying too  hard to be this gritty hard as nails bad ass woman. The plot itself, find the granddaughter, kidnapped in an explosion,  of a cantankerous wealthy older woman who hates everyone was a bit slow for me. Sunday is racing against time to stop another bomb plot and find the people responsible. This sounds like it would be fast paced and exciting but it fell short for me. Sure the story line and characters are solid as pertains to the plot and the book itself is very well written and a quick read so for that gave it three stars.

I am not sure if there is another book in this series I will read it but who knows. This was fast paced and a solid plot but for me it did not really work.This review was originally posted on Cindy's Book Binge

I loved the Bones books and was excited to see what this new series would be like. It does have a totally different feel from Tempe's books and it has a completely different set up.

Sunday Night, former Marine, former Cop and current hermit is asked by her former foster father to look into the disappearance of a young girl. Sunnie can see the similarities between the missing girl and herself and decides to take the case.

When she visits the girls grandmother (think ultra rich, used to getting her own way, elderly lady) she finds out more of what happened and travels to Chicago to begin her investigation.

Sunday is is scarred, mentally and physically from her experiences and her childhood of which we can see glimpses. She is tough as nails and whilst she has retreated from the world she is not completely cut off. I love meeting her twin Gus, I really enjoyed their relationship and how they unite against those who may write them off.

*DNF* Around page 50. Despite absolutely loving Kathy Reich's books in the past, I just could not get into this stand alone novel. I wasn't connecting well with the main character, Sunday Night, and found the writing style to be awkward and disjointed.

his is a departure from her Temperance Brennan (Bones) series and it grabbed me from the very first.

Sunday Nights (yes, her name and it's explained in the book) is living in a small house on a small island in the water off Charleston. Her only companion is a squirrel named Bob.

Unfortunately, her talents in the armed forces, and later, the police, have brought her skills to the attention of one of the Charleston elite who wants her to search for the people who killed her daughter and grandson and apparently kidnapped her grand daughter. Money is no object.

Reluctantly, Sunday takes the job, more as a favor to an old friend, than any real desire to change her life. By doing so however, she does her job very well, and soon there is a hornets nest buzzing from Chicago to L.A. to Washington to Louisville.

In between, there is an 'aside' where you are getting a side story from another character, which lends itself to the tension of the story. (Or are you?)

This is a book I started and put down all quilting and knitting until I finished it the next day, reading in parking lots while running errands and waiting after swim lessons.

Hopefully, Ms. Reichs will continue this character in future books.

I am going to be pretty blunt here. I have never read a book by Kathy Reichs before. Nope, haven’t read the Temperance Brennan series. So I am going into this review of Two Night as a new reader to this author and what I say in this review might not be a popular opinion or go with the flow of the other reviews.

I don’t think that Sunnie was supposed to be a likable character. She was too brash and tended to rub me the wrong way while reading. But, I actually enjoyed it. I liked that there was a female main character who was extremely flawed physically (she got stabbed in the eye and lost 30% of her sight) and she carried psychological scars from her time in a cult and overseas. It gave her depth that I rarely see in female main characters in this genre.

I did like that Sunnie was kind of forced to open up and rely on people during her investigation into the disappearance of Opaline’s granddaughter, Stella. She called her twin brother, Gus, in to help her when things got a bit out of control in Chicago and then she had to rely on the local police to thwart a terrorist attack and save Stella. Speaking of Stella, I really felt bad that Sunnie got so emotionally involved in finding her. In a way, I feel that she used Stella’s investigation to come to terms with her own awful past.

There was a parrell storyline to the main one. This storyline was heartbreaking. Not going to get into it too much but I will say this, I couldn’t figure out if the author was talking about Stella or Sunnie until almost the end of the book.

The end of the book was what I expected and then some. I liked the closure that all the storylines got and I am hoping that the author writes another book with Sunnie as her heroine. I would be very interested to see what future books would hold for her.

How many stars will I give Two Nights: 3.5 (rounded up to 4 for Goodreads)
