Q&D review: only listened to this because it was included with the version of the audiobook for The Near Witch. Wasn't something I would have read otherwise.

Reading this after finishing The Near Witch I really felt like this little prequel was unnecessary. Although it gave slight insight into "the stranger's" past it was predictable and it added a whole extra harsh layer that I did not think was necessary or contributed much to the story. It was a quick read but not one I would take the time for again.

It was the backstory needed after reading the near witch. It was wonderful and made me fall in love with Cole even more. It was a reminder of the magical tales V.E. Schwab can write in just a few pages. A must read if you’ve read the near witch and loved it as much as I did.

not sure what I was expecting but I sure wasn’t ready to have the world of the near witch blown open (no pun intended) in 60 pages. schwab broke my heart again.
