Midori is not a credible character. Rather than create a believable Japanese woman who wants to move to the United States and is stranded by an unreliable boyfriend, the author uses the old cliche of the misspoken (or miss thought) idioms. 

Other problems:
- random inclusion of Japanese phrases where they wouldn't be used
- a complete lack of honorifics (even when Midori is thinking / or speaking Japanese)
- Although Midori is a "fish out of water" in San Francisco, she can easily order French meals at the Fairmont Hotel.
- Midori is on a first name basis with nearly everyone. I get she's a thoroughly modern Japanese lady but she'd still be more likely to refer to most everyone by their family name.

The story would have been much better if it had been told from the assimilated Sean, rather than newly arrived Midori.
