there a few things I didn't like about this book. there were things I really liked about the book. I really liked the childhood best friends trope. that trope always wins me over idky. I liked Scarlett and Jesse's friendship, things were a bit shaky in the beginning but..yeah 😂. oh, I also loved the dual pov. I absolutely love when books have dual or multiple povs because I like seeing the thoughts of all of main characters if that makes sense. overall, this was a good book. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Katie McGarry was, still is and always will be one of my favorite authors of all time. Why? Because she writes real love stories. Real life relationships are far from perfect, as are the people in them. Katie's characters have heart, soul, body, blood and bones; it feels like I'm reading some type of biography, because they feel so real. I fall in love with their scars as much as their wit, with their personality as much as their mistakes. I can never find the right words to describe Katie McGarry's books, but I am never disappointed and they never fail to make me laugh and cry (sometimes at the same time). I can't wait for the next one.

I really loved this story so much. I really enjoyed this hard hitting contemopory. I really enjoyed the duel POV and found how this book tackled various types of abuse super compelling/heartbreaking. I liked the longer time frame of this novel. I really love the blast from the past love and really enjoyed this aspect of the novel. I was equally invested in both storylines. I found the end pacing a bit wired but other then such a stand out novel. I am super excited to see who book focused on.

You know that feeling when you get 100% lost in a good book? That was me with Only a Breath Apart. It took a couple chapters for me to hit my stride, but once I did, I didn't want to put it down. I just wanted to keep living in this world Katie created and breathing in her words. It was a beautiful book with a ton of heart.

I'm struggling a bit with how to make my words do justice to this gorgeous book Katie created. There's something about her books that makes me just feel like I'm actually living in them. I'm not just reading them, I'm experiencing everything right along with the characters. As you can imagine, Only a Breath Apart put me through the wringer and a myriad of emotions. There was fear because of what Scarlett was experiencing at home. A ton of emotions I can't even name over Jesse's need to keep his land. Swoons over the relationship developing between the two of them.

I feel like Only a Breath Apart is a book best experienced knowing little going in, so I'm not going to get into the nitty gritty here. This book was a journey. Or, maybe more specifically, two journeys. Jesse and Scarlett were both fantastic characters who experienced a lot of growth over the course of this book. There were ups and downs, but that just made it all the more realistic. It was an easy and addictive read, an emotional and heartfelt story. If you enjoy YA contemporary, Only a Breath Apart needs to be on your TBR.

After reading the Thunder Road series, Katie McGarry is an instant buy for me and one of my favorite authors. I had a really hard time getting into Only a Breath Apart, but even so the writing was still great and McGarry tackled the taboo topic of abuse in the perfect way. Just because I had a hard time getting into the story or connecting with the main characters does not make it less of a good book.
