this was a gripping read, very atmospheric (set in Northern Queensland) and the mystery was interesting
but more than that, the backstory of the 2 main characters was so compelling, I couldn't wait to know more about them, what had actually happened to them and how they would finally be cleared
I didn't want to put it down and I got the second book as soon as I finished this one, so excited to read it!

An engaging mystery novel set in Australia. 

There are several mysteries running concurrently in this book. 

There's Ted Conkaffey, an innocent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and is accused of the beating and rape of a young girl. Ted has to flee his Sydney home to escape the fallout of his accusation, even though he was released because there wasn't enough evidence to try/convict him.

There's crazy/quirky Amanda Pharrell, who pleaded guilty to the murder of a classmate in high school. She's served her time, and is now a private investigator. She's tapped Ted (an ex-cop) as a partner in her investigation of missing/presumed dead novelist Jake Scully. 

Jake Scully walked out of his house in the middle of the night and never returned. His wife needs to know definitively that he's dead before she can claim his insurance. But did Jake have a secret life?

It's a very engaging read with a lot going on. But the author lays everything out well. 

I read about half of this during one night of insomnia. Definitely thinking about reading more by this author.
