It had some pacing issues and I'd prefer if the relationships between the characters had been explored a little more, but all in all - the closest feeling thing to The Vikings I've ever come across.

I thought this book was very interesting. I like to call it a war fantasy, it takes place in a fantasy world but there aren't any elves or dragons or anything like that, so I don't really call it a high fantasy. There were some slow parts that I found myself speed reading through, but I still found it entertaining enough to want to keep reading. I thought the character progression was really well thought out. Carew's writing style really clicked with me too. 

There were some really intense moments were I was holding my breath hoping a character wouldn't die. I won't say if they lived or not, because, spoilers. :P 

I think Gray and Keturah ( I think that's how you spell her name!) were my favorite! They seemed wise, calm, and collected, but ruthless. 

I would definitely recommend if you are in the mood for an adult fantasy without a strong romance subplot. It was kind of nice to take a break from that! It was bloody, gritty, and just good! I will definitely read the second book!
