I don't know about James Joyce but Cunningham does remind me of Virginia Woolf a lot. And, as with Virginia, I really like his writing style. I love his voice. He speaks to me in a way few authors do, and it has nothing to do with being the best writer ever or anything like that. It is what it is. I really like Cunningham better than other writers of his generation, and for no apparent reason. However.

However, By Nightfall disappointed me. It just wasn't enough. It wasn't like The Hours. It certainly wasn't like A home at the End of the World. It lacked the poetry, the beautiful images, the deep characterization. I didn't care for Peter or Mizzy. I kind of liked Rebecca a bit, but not that much either. It was all a bit dull, to be honest. But, well. Sometimes things like this happen. No author can be perfect all the time.
