These Deathless Bones is an award nominated short story that I recently discovered through exploring Goodreads (which I rarely do). I went into this story completely blind, didn't read the blurb, nor read reviews. I read it for the cover and Cassandra Khaw's name. I scrolled through this story in a heartbeat because of how easily I am immersed into the scene between a step mother that is a witch and her step son, the child from her husband's previous marriage. The child is not as innocent as he may seem, he is cruel and despicable. The turn of events excited me, though sometimes disturbing as it is revealed the extent of how dark and evil the step son is. For years she tried to love him but she has had enough. 
I highly recommend for everyone to read it! It is less than 20 pages too. Cassandra Khaw gained a fan out of me. I will definitely check out her other works!

These Deathless Bones reads a bit too much like a proposal for a book than a standalone short story. There's a great story wanting to get out, it just needs a bit more detail to make it seem earned. As it is, the imagery and magic are haunting, and this is definitely a case of more would be better.

a bit more gruesome than moody but perhaps i would be interested of a wider, longer context to this world
