Such an amazing series, one of my favorites that I've ever read! I loved learning about the Ainu indigenous culture in Hokkaido and their way of life. The journey for the gold was suspenseful, thrilling, tragic, and layered in a very intriguing way. All of the characters are very intriguing and you can't help but love most of them despite their very obvious character flaws. I could probably write a character introspection essay about most of the characters - that's how well written the cast is!

The art is an effective unnerving mix of pointy whitespace manga elegance and spinal columns n gore. Both clean and grotesque. A lot of hunting and zoology facts involved: Someone cared. Also Sugimoto chamber-punches a bear.

Their leader, the utterly cold-blooded and driven Lieutenant Tsurumi, will stop at nothing to find the gold. And Tsurumi is not the only formidable opponent Saichi and Asirpa must deal with—a former samurai who escaped with the prisoners is carving his own path to the loot. These enemies will put Saichi’s “Immortal” nickname to the test…

I love how Ainu culture is woven into the story! I feel like I'm learning a lot while also not feeling any drag on the pacing. The cliffhanger at the end though... thank God I already have volume 3 lined up.
