When Sherrilyn first started this series, she fashioned the first few stories around a single event, a Mardi Gras , and how each character made it through. It was a clever ploy that worked well and wove itself into Acheron's opus and later Styxx's. Lately, her series has been doing something similar, but maybe not to as great a success. Instead, I kept getting sidetracked as we revisited scenes from the last several stories. I lost the emotional thread of Illarion and Eidylin. Not to say the book was bad, it wasn't. It's just that once I reached the end, it left me feeling sort of meh. I feel like the Dragon's stories are so bound up that you cannot get a solid emotional through way to each of their ends. As we revisit those scenes from before, my mind wanders. The Dragon's awakening was supposed to be huge, but each story feels almost the same. They meet, neither wanting anything to do with each others species, but find themselves irresistably drawn to each other ( quickly ), then a betrayal, then a reconciliation, then separation, then battle, then happy ever after. I'm glad we know the full backstory of the Werehunters, I'm always happy to see Ash, Styxx, Vane, ect. And even a so so story from Ms. Kenyon is still fun. I just haven't been truly invested in any outcome since Styxx, if I'm being perfectly honest. I miss racing to the end of the book and being thoroughly and emotional drained from the read. The Dragons are badass, the returning characters are great, but I know the ending waaaaay before it happens. And there really is only so many times I can tromp back over the well worn ground of the last couple of stories "big" moments before I throw my hands up in frustration.

This book is part of a series and should not be read out of order because it can become quite confusing for those who are new to the world of the dark-hunters. Although most of the book involved the summary of what happened previously but from Illarion's point of view. The beginning started off well but towards the end, I felt that everything was rushed for the love story between Illarion and Edilyn. I would have liked to have more scenes with the two of them together.

For those who love the series might also enjoy the appearances of characters from previous books. It's nice to know more about their life after their "happily ever after".

The old Kenyon is back. I was really disappointed about her last few books which seemed like a 1000 page rough draft, unedited. This is back to the Kenyon I read and enjoyed.
