A startling, amusing, and altogether thoroughly absorbing tome that fulfills all the promises of a Flavia de Luce novel. While comedy and ingenuity are the high note, grief provides its somber undercurrent, and the transitions between both modes are seamless and untroubling. I grin, I laugh, I'm affected by quiet moroseness. The reader's emotions and intellect are pleasingly not spared.

While it is inevitable that one sometimes stands apart from Flavia due to her youth (the mature reader seeing things she doesn't; and seeing through, sadly easily, those thin hopes of bringing Harriet back to life), in the end one always stands with her.

This is the type of book I would have enjoyed as a girl and that might have helped persuade me to pursue a STEM (well at least the Science part) career. Flavia is part "Harriet the Spy" and part Marie Curie. As usual, a fast and fun read with only a few loose ends/oddities that did not detract overall.

My favorite of the Flavia series by far! Oh Alan Bradley, where have you been all my life? If you haven't already read this series, by all means, DO IT NOW. As in, get your butt off the couch and run, or drive, to the library, or the bookstore, and get all seven books now. Well perhaps not all seven unless you've recently come into a large sum of money and have no reservations about spending $200 on books. Nevertheless, this is hands down my favorite book series in all of creation. I think little Flavia may even be more impressive to me than Sherlock Holmes himself. And that's saying something. I have been told in the past that watching any type of mystery or crime drama in my presence is relentlessly annoying, simply because I spend every second if it trying to determine whodunit. But just about every book in this series has given me the what for and left me waiting until the very end to finally realize who did it and how. Well played sir. Well played. Love, love, love these books.
