They Call Me The Cat Lady is pretty far from the usual genre of books I usually read, but I’m very glad I stepped out of my comfort zone for this one. This book is poignant and heart-warming and actually made me tear up at parts. It’s a really lovely book about a middle-aged cat lady with plenty of secrets and a painful past that she tries to bury.

Nancy Jones is an employee at a local school who lives in a cozy home with five cats. She has a nice routine and her cats keep her company. One day, her co-workers start asking into her past, a past she has long since buried. Then, she befriends a bullied schoolboy where one thing led to another and she finds herself in a stranger’s home and sees a photo of her deceased daughter.

This book really made me cry. It’s a contemporary women’s fiction taking place in the present-day with a lot of sections wherein we see Nancy’s past. Here, she was forced to confront the ghosts she has long since buried away in order for her to move on with her life. It’s clear that the pain is still there and she didn’t really have proper closure so the wound never fully healed. In this book, with the help of old and newfound friends, she was able to confront what haunts her still and get the closure she deserves.

They Call Me The Cat Lady has such a charming and cozy tone despite the fact that it does touch on plenty of difficult subjects. It doesn’t shy away in discussing those and I liked how those subjects were tackled with a lot of nuance and respect. It packs a lot of emotional punch but it makes the story so much stronger.

Overall, I really enjoyed They Call Me A Cat Lady and I can recommend it to anyone who like’s Literary Women’s Fiction or anyone who like me, is trying to dip their toes in.
