The fundamental flaw with this book is that it's set in 2140 and not 2040. It's hard to imagine that in 120 years, people in New York will still be be programming in R, hanging out at Mezzrow's, and still talking about Ben Bernanke and the 2008 financial crash. On this last note, it felt especially awkward for the characters to be drawing lessons from 2008 when we're living through a worse economic crisis. And this doesn't even address the characters and plot of this book. But imagining the consequences of sea level rise on cities was interesting.

Probably 3.5 stars. KSR is super hard to read (such dense material!), but I always come away feeling like I've learnt a lot. This is a hyperlocal book though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brilliant book. The social commentary was beautiful but never heavy-handed. KSR changed writing style dependent on the character, which was enthralling once I noticed it. Nothing ever felt forced and everything about this was top notch to me. After having read the mars trilogy, the differences here thrilled me as I thought they were pretty magnificent. I highly suggest for pretty much all people. KSR is one of the best when it comes to hard sci-fi and this was just that.

For all the hype surrounding this book, I was dumbfounded by how poorly it’s written. The dialog, in particular, is insipid, stiff and unbearable. 

No matter how potentially interesting the subject matter, I couldn’t make it past the first few chapters.
