Adolin sighed softly. 'Of course. He's probably their leader now or  something. Storming bridgeboy.’

‘Where have you been?’ Dalinar said. 

‘I’ve always been here,' God said. ‘Always with you, Dalinar. Oh, I’ve watched you for a long, long time.’

‘Here? You're... not the Almighty, are you?’

Every time I try to bring myself to restart this, I'm slapped in the face by the "but it's not ACTUALLY incest" romance plot line like 15 minutes in and put it down again

...followed by considering if I care enough- If I enjoyed the first and second books enough- to try and drudge further and the answer is I honestly just don't.

I’m so torn - I am really loving the magic and the world of this series, but 1300 pages with only ~200 of excitement is always gonna be a rough ratio. I’m committed to reading through book 5 but don’t know that I’ll go past that

This book was a major struggle bus for me. I don't know if I'm burnt out from Sanderson reading them back to back or what. I've never particularly cared for Dalinar in the first place and it was hard for me to connect to all that was going on.

The third book in the Stormlight Archive continues to impress. While I definitely read this more slowly than the second, I enjoyed it at least as much.

The relationship between Shallan and Adolin continues to be a highlight. I appreciate that it’s honest, and has a complexity that makes it feel so very real. I might steal a few lines from this book for wedding vows, I like them so much.

I also really appreciate the crossover with Warbreaker. Definitely the most overt one I’ve seen yet, and given that it was a favourite of mine, I am all here for it. I will admit though to not having read Elantris, and Mistborn era 2, so there are definitely some references and crossovers I could be completely missing. Did it take me a good chunk of the way through the book to clue in to Szeth’s sword? Yes. Was I like a kid at Christmas when I did? Also yes. Man that sword makes me smile.

I also really appreciate how much of a hard time Kaladin is having with his oaths right now. The struggle to uphold what he has already committed to with a strict perfectionism is very well done and at least for me - very relatable. I can’t wait to see how he grows in the next one. Teft too, was a great arc. I’m very much itching to see more of Rock and his arc, there is definitely some stuff to unpack there.

I will say, I know Lopen and Lift are written as comic relief characters, and that boy oh boy does this book need that at times. But I’m really not the most sold on either of them. They seem to be written with quite a heavy hand, and I think the delivery suffers for it. I like them well enough, but they seem more like caricatures than people. And Sando does such a good job with delivering complex and deep personalities with the rest of his characters that these two feel like they fall flat.

I will also say, I was surprised the Jassnah managed to go from my favourite character to one of my least favourites upon her return here. Wow is she heartless and callous in her practicality through most of the book. I am quite glad that she didn’t play a larger role. And I can only hope that her mercy at the end was the conclusion of an off screen arc for her that will make her more palatable in future entries.

I should circle back and cover the rest of my older bases with Sando. I should also probably take a break and get to some of the other books I’ve started, or put on my tbr. I will probably do neither or these and move right along to dawnshard.

i big fat did not enjoy this. 

i still cared about like 5% of it because i like kaladin but .... over 1,000 pages??? of literally nothing happening???? no sir. this didn’t even pick up at the ending for me and i just had to skim the last 100 pages to make sure i would actually finish it and be done with this frustration. i seriously do not care about anyone besides kaladin and jasnah (who we basically never got to see) and i don’t think i can get through another book just for the two of them. and although i was VERY bored for most of this book, there’s a much bigger issue that i think is a genuine problem. 

this big part i hated about this was the constant invalidation of depression. and the idea that everyone needs to be in a relationship. and shallan being really damn creepy about relationships. it was all weird & gross & problematic & i hated it. 

i still might read dawnshard because i already preorded it thinking this series wouldn’t turn into a christian shitshow of ableism, homophobia, and belittling of mental illness but .... i think i’m done reading about characters i either don’t care about at all or completely invalidate my existence. i’m really tired of authors giving us mental illness or disability or lgbtq+ rep and then just fucking ruining it. like if you don’t think these groups are valid ... maybe don’t write them in in the first place? a series without any rep is 100% better than a series that gives you rep and then invalidates it all later on. just a suggestion.

Well I have now read over 3500 pages in the Stormlight Archives series, and although the series is only 1/3 of the way through, I think it's safe to say this is one of my new favorite series.
