My Life as a White Trash Zombie

This is the first book in a series. Angel wakes up in the emergency room, not really remembering how she got there. She gets a note telling her that she now has a job in the coroner's office. She does not know who got her the job but she needs a job and money. Then she gets a note to eat brains. She is not sure why but this makes sense to her; she is actually craving brains. Eventually she realizes that she is a zombie.

There is someone going around killing people and chopping off their heads. Angel fairly quickly figures out that the victims had all been zombies. So now she knows that there is a zombie killer on the loose. To further complicate things, her drunken father destroys her brain stash. Things escalate quickly from bad to worse. But help comes from some surprising sources at times.

This book was a good, fun read. It had mystery elements, a hint of romance, good action and humor. Angel is a complex, interesting character. She seems to be hard core but she has a soft center. There are decent secondary characters in the book as well. Angel's father is a character that readers will love to hate.

I enjoyed this book and have the second book on my Kindle to read. Hope to get to it soon.

Or, How I became a zombie and changed my life for the better!

I've been aware of these books for a while. Zombies and vampires don't really appeal to me, so I hadn't given it serious consideration. But after reading James Nicholl's review, I thought I might give it a try some day. Then it came up on sale at Audible, so I bit. Heh.

I quite enjoyed the book. Angel's slow discovery of who she is and what happened to her to make her who she is carried me right along. She's sassy and foul-mouthed, and has a low opinion of herself. But, while being a zombie has some drawbacks, it also has some benefits. The story of all this unfolds throughout the book. It's a witty book, in a dark way. I laughed out loud numerous times.

It's a light, enjoyable read (or listen). I liked the narrator (Allison McLemore) for the Audible version. I'm not sure her Southern accent is really Louisiana authentic, but it's close enough for me.

Angel is what you would probably call white trash. She dropped out of school, lives in a dump with her drunk dad, can't hold a job, and is into all kinds of drugs. One night, she goes out partying as usual, and her whole life changes. She gets into a terrible car accident, she's a bloody mess, then wakes up in the hospital with not a scratch. Did she hallucinate the whole thing? Read the book and find out!! I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters. Angel, Marcus, and even Nick the prick. I look forward to the next book.

I really enjoyed this book. I purchased it as an audiobook over a year ago and just haven't been able to get myself to read it. Oddly, cover is what drew me in and kept me from reading this book.

Once I started reading, I realized that this was going to be one of my favorite series. This was a one day read for me. Angel is a great character. She is the definition of white trash and she knows it. She is also smart. I did figure out where things were going far before the story led to it but I enjoyed working through the story with Angel and realizing her struggles. She grew as a character and prevailed.

The narration in this audio book was superb. There was a fluid transfer from character to character and I was impressed with the inflection of each character. Most often the narration doesn't change a book for me but Allison McLemore is awesome.

I am excited to start book 2.
