I normally like his books. This one, though, read like it was written by a completely different person.

It lacks Scalzi's usual humour. I also found it lacks a point, it exists to exist. Still, it's well written so I didn't want to rate it low.

As an agnostic, it's somewhat hard to rate a book about faith. 

Nevertheless, I can't stop thinking about "The God Engines". I wonder whether it is "merely" Dark Fantasy or if there is a deeper meaning. I have the feeling the latter might be the case, tho. To me, there is a strong undertone of "don't use your contempt for other gods or beliefs to drive you" (each god-powered ship is both a vessel and a war machine, after all). I'd like to think it's a message to the religious hate-mongering crowds who twist and bend their holy books to justify waging war against others.

I might be talking out of my ass, tho. I don't know what Scalzi wants to say with this book; I can only assume, and even then I might be completely wrong.

Either way, I've enjoyed this read quite a bit. :)
