They be fucking up literature throughout history 😔

But the pilgrims were not solicitous to save or transport the volumes of an unknown tongue: the perishable substance of paper or parchment can only be preserved by the multiplicity of copies; the literature of the Greeks had almost centred in the metropolis; and, without computing the extent of our loss, we may drop a tear over the libraries that have perished in the triple fire of Constantinople.

 Justinian suppressed the schools of Athens and the consulship of Rome, which had given so many sages and heroes to mankind. Both these institutions had long since degenerated from their primitive glory, yet some reproach may be justly inflicted on the avarice and jealousy of a prince by whose hand such venerable ruins were destroyed.

Nothing however, was neglected by the anxious father, and by the men of virtue and learning whom he summoned to his assistance, to expand the narrow mind of young Commodus, to correct his growing vices, and to render him worthy of the throne for which he was designed. Provides a solid range of bibliographical references across key players in Europe during the covered time period. Makes liberal use of semicolons; which is always a blessing upon literature. 10/10 :)

Honestly very long and if you are not all that into history don’t read it; unless you are not a WUSS and want to learn useless facts! 

I will be reading a book about China next folks, where I will post my next thrilling review.
