Chaos Seeds: Book VIII: Monsters

Full disclosure: I'm a gaming nerd. I especially love RPG games, so when I learned about the LitRPG genre, it sounded like something that would be right up my alley. In my search for what to read, I ran across Aleron King being referred to as the "King of LitRPG" so I figured, why not start with him? I found this book on Audible and decided to dive in.

I'm going to start with what I liked about this book. It was fun! It was so incredibly fun. It was like being in a RPG game which, I suppose, is kind of the point, lol. I thought the world was immersive and I enjoyed being able to read all the stats and skills. I mean, learning about new skills is part of the fun of RPGs! And I thought the premise of the book was inventive.

Now for what I didn't like. We're gonna start with the characters. The characters were just so flat and boring. That especially applies to our main character, "Richter", who gets sucked into a game and just DOES NOT CARE about that fact. Like, he jumps right into his role game persona and doesn't spare a single thought for how he got there, why he's there, or the family and friends he's left behind. I just feel like that would have added so much more depth to the character. And pretty much all the other characters he encounters are about as deep as a puddle. It really took me out of the book. Another think I didn't like was the narration. I'm sorry, but the narrator made me laugh multiple times and not because what was being said was funny (let's be honest, most of the jokes in this book were pretty juvenile). I just... did not jive with this narrator and his vocal interpretations. 

I suppose, all in all, I enjoyed this book for the mindless entertainment factor, but I'm not 100% I'll be continuing the series. And, if I do, I'll definitely be getting the physical version.
