Emily Brontë

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres (as an adjective, wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Emily Jane Brontë nasceu a 30 de Julho de 1818, em Thornton, no Yorkshire, e faleceu em Haworth, vítima de tuberculose, a 19 de Dezembro de 1848, com apenas 30 anos. Filha de Patrick Brontë, nomeado pároco vitalício em Haworth, foi criada com os seus irmãos Charlotte, Anne e Patrick Branwell pela tia, Elizabeth Branwell. A família constituía uma sociedade fechada e isolada, e os quatro irmãos sentem desde a infância motivação para o estudo e para a composição literária. Escreveram contos, histórias fantásticas, poemas, jornais, folhetins e editaram uma revista mensal. Published in 1847, Emily Brontë’s only novel Wuthering Heights is an evergreen classic. A passionate tale of love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the novel challenged Victorian ideals of morality, class, religion and gender inequality. Heathcliff, an orphan, brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, represents the quintessential Byronic hero—brooding and enigmatic, whose social status is foregrounded by his lack of a first name. Spurned by Catherine and humiliated by her brother, Hindley, Heathcliff leaves the Heights, only to return later as a revenge-seeking, wealthy and polished man. Catherine chooses to marry Edgar Linton, an antithesis to Heathcliff. What follows is a series of disastrous events in which the characters are consumed by their tragic fate. Evocative and gothic, the novel was initially termed ‘abhorrent’ and later appreciated for its originality and poetic grandeur.
