In recent decades, the importance of sound for remembering the past and for creating a sense of belonging has been increasingly acknowledged. We keep "sound souvenirs" such as cassette tapes and long play albums in our attics because we want to be able to recreate the music and everyday sounds we once cherished. Artists and ordinary listeners deploy the newest digital audio technologies to recycle past sounds into present tunes. Sound and memory are inextricably intertwined, not just through the commercially exploited nostalgia on oldies radio stations, but through the exchange of valued songs by means of pristine recordings and cultural practices such as collecting, archiving and listing. This book explores several types of cultural practices involving the remembrance and restoration of past sounds. At the same time, it theorizes the cultural meaning of collecting, recycling, reciting, and remembering sound and music.

The promise of connective platforms is that they offer personalized services and contribute to innovation and economic growth, while bypassing cumbersome institutional or industrial overhead. In The Platform Society, Van Dijck, Poell and De Waal offer a comprehensive analysis of a connective world where platforms have penetrated the heart of societies-disrupting markets and labor relations, circumventing institutions, transforming social and civic practices and affecting democratic processes. This book questions what role online platforms play in the organization of Western societies. First, how do platform mechanisms work and to what effect are they deployed? Second, how can platforms incorporate public values and benefit the public good? The Platform Society analyzes intense struggles between competing ideological systems and contesting societal actors-market, government and civil society-raising the issue of who is or should be responsible for anchoring public values and the common good in a platform society. Public values include of course privacy, accuracy, safety, and security, but they also pertain to broader societal effects, such as fairness, accessibility, democratic control, and accountability. Such values are the very stakes in the struggle over the platformization of societies around the globe. The Platform Society highlights how this struggle plays out in four private and public sectors: news, urban transport, health, and education. Each struggle highlights local dimensions, for instance fights over regulation between individual platforms and city governments, but also addresses the level of the platform ecosystem as well as the geopolitical level where power clashes between global markets and (supra-)national governments take place.

In de twintigste eeuw zijn er steeds nieuwe apparaten op de markt gekomen waarmee we in het binnenste van het levende lichaam kunnen kijken zonder de huid te hoeven opensnijden. Röntgenapparaten, echoscopie, endoscopie, magnetic resonans imaging (mri) en computertomografie (ct) hebben het lichaam schijnbaar transparant gemaakt voor de arts. Naast medici zijn het vooral de populaire media die de binnenkant van het lichaam toegankelijk maken voor het lekenoog. We zijn inmiddels gewend geraakt aan afbeeldingen van de kleinste en meest intieme details van het menselijk lichaam. Foto ’s van een foetus in de baarmoeder, endoscopische opnames van een prostaatvergroting of televisiebeelden van riskante operaties: niets blijft meer verborgen voor het oog van de publieke camera. Maar is het lichaam wel zo transparant? Waar medische en mediabeelden de binnenkant van het lichaam uitlichten, ontstaan interessante vragen. Hoe wordt de peratieve scheiding van Siamese tweelingen – sinds de uitvinding van de film – in beeld gebracht? Welke rol spelen pretecho’s en medischeecho’s in de prenatale zorg? Mogen geplastineerde, dode lichamen gebruikt worden als kunstobjecten om bezoekers meer inzicht te geven in anatomische structuren? Welke macht dichtte men het röntgenapparaat rond het begin van de twintigste eeuw toe? De medische blik waarmee we binnen in het lichaam kijken, staat niet los van de cultuur waarin deze verspreid wordt. Onze opvattingen over gezondheid, intimiteit en lichamelijkheid worden (bewust of onbewust) gestuurd door programmamakers, kunstenaars en filmproducenten. In zeven essays wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat het Transparante Lichaam in heden en verleden een constant maar tegelijk veranderend ideaal is geweest. Dit boek probeert een tipje van die complexe verwevenheid van technologie, wetenschap, media en cultuur op te lichten.
