The Journey to Truth Is an Experience is the first English translation of Il Cammino al vero un'esperienza, Giussani's early works on the Christian experience, written from 1959-64. Luigi Giussani, a high school religion teacher throughout the 1950s and 1960s, grounded his teachings in the vast body of experience to be found in Christianity's two-thousand-year history. He told his students, “I'm not here to make you adopt the ideas I will give you as your own, but to teach you a method for judging the things I will say.” Throughout his life, education was one of Giussani's primary intellectual interests. He believed that effective education required an adequate background in the Christian tradition, presented within a lived experience that underscored the capacity of the faith to answer universal questions. What he proposed was a process that allowed one to sift through tradition, critically examining it and comparing it against the ultimate criteria for judgment: the desires of the heart. In Giussani's view, the primary concern was to “educate the human heart as God made it.” In The Risk of Education he states that fear leads students to associate this process of criticism with negativity or doubt. Yet, without an education in criticism, students cannot develop conviction. At a time when young people are abandoning the church and questioning the value of faith, Giussani's method of judging and verifying Christianity as an experience seems a necessary intervention. In esso la scoperta della vita come «vocazione» non avviene per deduzione, ma per il mostrarsi di una esperienza vissuta secondo ragione dentro l'afflato del Mistero. Si tratta del percorso di un anno che don Luigi Giussani ha realizzato in dialogo con un centinaio di giovani decisi a impegnare la propria vita con Cristo in una forma di dedizione totale al Mistero e al suo destino nella storia: la Chiesa la chiama «verginità». Dall'utopia alla presenza (1975-1978)

L'attrattiva, lo stupore iniziale suscitato dall'incontro con quell'uomo, Gesù di Nazareth, era un giudizio che diventava immediatamente un attaccamento. Non era un attaccamento sentimentale, era un fenomeno di ragione, una manifestazione di quella ragione per cui, guardando la persona che hai davanti, nasce un giudizio di stima, una meraviglia di stima che ti fa attaccare. Di qui si origina una nuova moralità: il cambiamento della vita avviene se si vuol bene come Simon Pietro voleva bene a Gesù, che nemmeno osava guardare in faccia perché lo aveva tradito. La novità della vita è nel dire Tu a questa presenza. Occorre che questo si agiti, si sviluppi, cresca con volontà, con la sensibilità nostra, con l'aiuto nostro, con l'iniziativa nostra. Quella Presenza, da cui tutto il mondo fuoresce, è la presenza da cui ogni uomo è perdonato, cioè salvato: una presenza che si chiama "misericordia". Seguire Cristo pone nelle condizioni migliori per affrontare la realtà e usare le cose, camminando verso il destino. Se non ha questa incidenza, Cristo è una cosa che non c'entra con la vita: c'entrerebbe con la vita futura, ma non c'entrerebbe con la vita presente.

Si può vivere così? raccontava le conversazioni intrattenute da don Luigi Giussani con un gruppo di giovani decisi a impegnare la propria vita con Cristo, secondo l'intenzione di una dedizione totale. Un libro che godette di grande successo e larga diffusione presso credenti e non credenti. Si può (veramente?!) vivere così? raccoglie i dialoghi tra don Giussani e altri gruppi di giovani che proprio quel testo ha saputo ispirare. Riflessioni germogliate a partire da quelle originarie e fondanti: una vera "scuola", sviluppatasi intorno ai presupposti della statura della ragione e delle esigenze del cuore. Se ne ricava il ritratto di un don Giussani dedito a un appassionato esame del valore delle parole che legano a Cristo. Un'indagine sollecitata dalle domande dei ragazzi, in un dialogo ricco e aperto a chiunque voglia parteciparvi, anche tramite la lettura.

Si può (veramente?!) vivere così?

Il volume Qui e ora, quarto della serie "L'Equipe", riproduce le lezioni e i dialoghi di don Giussani con i responsabili degli universitari di Comunione e Liberazione negli anni 1984 e 1985. Fra le molte provocazioni, una porta al cuore del problema: "Io sono la resurrezione e la vita. Credi tu questo?". Come si può rispondere alla domanda che Cristo rivolge a Marta, davanti al fratello morto? In altre parole, com'è possibile la fede oggi? Il punto di partenza non può essere un'emozione, una sensibilità particolare, una convinzione o la lettura di un libro. L'uomo che ha detto: "Io sono la via, la verità e la vita" è risorto, cioè è contemporaneo alla storia. "Sarò con voi fino alla fine dei secoli." Dove lo si vede? Dove lo si ascolta? La sua presenza qui e ora coincide con un fenomeno visibile, tangibile, concreto, che è la compagnia dei credenti, corpo Suo misterioso.
