Make My Logo Bigger: 40 Years of Branding and Design by Michael Peters and Partners chronicles the story of Michael Peters, one of Britain's most significant design luminaries. Still actively lecturing in the fields of graphics and branding, Michael Peters is an inextricable component of the history of commercial design. Michael Peters began his venture into graphic design at London College of Printing, continuing his studies abroad at Yale, where was he tutored by such greats as Paul Rand, Herbert Matter and Alexej Brodovitch; he was also fortunate to work as an assistant to Bauhaus legend, Josef Albers. Peters then worked at CBS in New York, which was at the time a mecca for the creative marketing profession. He returned to London and set up Klein Peters Ltd with Lou Klein in 1968, followed by his own company, Michael Peters and Partners in 1970. More recently, Peters has formed Identica, a branding and creative consultancy with clients such as Vodafone, Nike and Universal Studios. Throughout his career Peters has worked on highly successful campaigns, ranging from Bird's Eye food products to Penhaligon's perfume. His philanthropic and forward thinking philosophy is celebrated by the Royal College of Art award in Peters' name. This attitude has put him firmly at the forefront of the British design renaissance, together with key figures such as Sir Terence Conran, Rodney Fitch and Wally Olins. "There Was No Music" is a recollection of a naval aviator and founding member of a unique combat aviation unit, the HA(L)-3 "Seawolves", the most decorated navy squadron of the Vietnam conflict. The unit is currently the subject of a Smithsonian sponsored historical novel and a nationally televised PBS documentary. The author is cited in the novel and appears in the documentary. In a parallel narrative, the author reflects on the aftermath of the combat experience, a quixotic journey, dogged by post-traumatic stress related to the combat experience. Though the subject matter is often grim, the author's perception is cast in a darkly humorous context. This work evolves in two concurrent parts, one detailing my Vietnam combat experience where, as a decorated naval aviator the author logged in excess of 800 hours of combat flight time and was: twice wounded; twice shot down; and continually engaged in combat actions culminating in a top-secret rescue operation. The parallel story considers the authors reentry into civilian life, a unique odyssey inter-twined with significant socio-political events of the post-World War II era: the Southern California beach scene; Watergate and President Nixon's resignation; Aspen, Colorado evolving as a haven for refugees of the 60's cultural revolution and a celebrity mecca; Gary Hart's disastrous presidential campaigns; and the launch of the International Space Station. While in Vietnam the author flew heavily armed helicopters off refitted World War II transport ships that also served as a mother craft to the river patrol boat teams that plied the Mekong River. The patrol boats were seeking out munitions and supplies that were being delivered via nondescript watercraft to the insurgent Viet Cong guerilla squads that occupied the Mekong Delta. The helicopters provided air cover to counter the countless sniper attacks and set ambushes directed at the boats. The mission was unique to the Vietnam conflict and the author was among the initial cadre of pilots, dubbed the Seawolves, who gave life to and validated the concept. These efforts anticipated and enabled the formation of Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron three, HA(L)-3. These endeavors also attracted the attention of another fledging organization, the US Navy SEALS, that resulted in collaborative efforts that would continue throughout the Vietnam conflict.

To understand contemporary times, we must appreciate the extent to which our lives are affected by the cultural and political struggle between "official" narratives and the counternarratives which emerge as oppositional responses. Counternarratives develops a concept of "postmodern counternarratives" as a frame for exploring the politics of media, technology and education within everyday struggles for human identities and loyalties. The authors identify two forms of counternarratives. One functions as a critique of the modernist propensity for grand narratives. The second concept, which is the focus of the book, builds on the first; the idea of "little stories" addressing cultural and political opposition to the "official" narratives used to manipulate public consciousness. Each marks an important point of contestation within contemporary education and culture: curriculum, pedagogy, literacy, media representations and applications of new technologies.

Twins present special problems for the study of lateralisation, both psychological and biological. Central to both areas is the common observation that identical (monozygotic) twins can differ in their laterality. In the case of hand preference, this is most obvious in the one in five twin pairs where one is right-handed and the other left-handed. A similar problem can be found morphologically, not only in normal anatomical traits, such as hair whorls, which can be in opposite direction, but also in the rare condition of conjoined twins, where it is frequently the case that one twin has its heart and viscera in the normal orientation (situs solitus) and the other is mirror reversed (situs inversus). This special issue of Laterality brings together papers on these different aspects of twinning. Two of the papers are biological, one providing a detailed analysis of the laterality of artificially conjoined twins created by fusing two different species of newt, and the other overviewing the recent developments in understanding the molecular biology of visceral lateralisation in relation to twinning. The other papers concern aspects of cerebral lateralisation in twins, one providing a much needed meta-analysis and critical overview of the twin literature, another providing detailed data from a large study of handedness in twins, a third asking about the almost neglected question of footedness, earedness and eyedness in twins, and the fourth looking at lateralised cognitive processing. Between them these papers extend the literature on lateralisation in twins, and reinforce the need to consider the lateralisation of twins from biological, neurological and psychological perspectives.

This book revises the existing account of the first Rudd Government's engagement with China, placing Australian foreign direct investment screening policy at the centre of the story. At the time, the Rudd Government was accused of holding an unnecessarily interventionist approach to Chinese Sovereign-Owned Enterprise investments into the Australian mining sector. This book claims that the Australian Government had a deep and coherent understanding of the problem posed by Chinese investments that went well-beyond any simplistic 'China Inc.' or geopolitical threats. The key policymakers believed that the Chinese state-directed investments threatened the integrity of the liberal governance structures on which the Australian state is founded, and so Australian sovereignty itself. While the response of the Rudd Government was largely ineffectual, the logic underpinning it remains the best framework for guiding Australia's engagement with China into the 2020s, as well as the engagement of other liberal states coming to grips with China's rise.
