﻿Berangkat dari pengamatan sederhana bahwa penggundulan hutan telah membuat perempuan di desanya harus berjalan lebih jauh lagi untuk mencari kayu bakar, Wangari Maathai, seorang perempuan suku Kikuyu di Kenya, akhirnya mencermati adanya kaitan gamblang antara rezim pemerintahan yang tidak demokratis, kerusakan lingkungan, kemiskinan, subordinasi terhadap kaum perempuan, dan perdamaian. »Unmittelbar, aufrichtig und wunderschön.« Bill Clinton Als Wangari Maathai mit dem Friedensnobelpreis geehrt wurde, feierte ganz Nairobi. 2006 schrieb sie dann die außergewöhnliche Geschichte ihres Lebens auf. 1940 in einem Kikuyu-Dorf am Fuße des Mount Kenya geboren, ergriff sie die Chance, in den USA und Deutschland zu studieren. Zurück in Kenia wurde sie die erste Professorin des Landes und die erste grüne Politikerin Afrikas. Sie gründete das Umweltschutzprogramm »Green Belt Movement«, das zu einer panafrikanischen Bewegung wurde. Doch ihr Engagement brachte ihr nicht nur Zustimmung ein. Präsident Arap Moi ließ sie viele Male verhaften, schickte seine Polizisten, wenn sie sich schützend vor den Regenwald stellte. Die Frauenverbände beschimpften sie, weil sie ihre Auflehnung gegen die Männer ungehörig fanden, und ihr Ehemann verließ sie und ihre drei Kinder, weil sie »zu eigensinnig und zu schwer zu kontrollieren« gewesen sei. ›Afrika, mein Leben‹ erzählt bildhaft und anekdotenreich die Lebensgeschichte einer charismatischen Frau, die Hoffnung in die Welt trug. Wangari Maathai wurde 1940 im Nyeri District, Kenia, geboren und starb 2011 in Nairobi. Sie studierte Biologie in den USA und Deutschland und gründete 1977 das Aufforstungsprojekt »Green Belt Movement«. Im Jahr 2002 wurde sie bei den ersten freien Wahlen Kenias ins Parlament gewählt, 2003 ernannte Präsident Mwai Kibaki sie zur stellvertretenden Ministerin für Umwelt. 2004 wurde sie als erste afrikanische Frau mit dem Friedensnobelpreis geehrt.

Born in the Aberdare Mountains in Kenya in 1940, Maathai grew up in a close-knit Kikuyu community where food, fresh water and fuel were plentiful. As postwar colonialism brought with it European crops and farming methods, the environmental balance was disrupted. This title talks about one womans struggle to save the trees.
