I can see why some people might not like this story. I think a lot of it does come down to the translation though. I have an edition that’s translated by Mrs St. Simon and it was completely magical. It just feels like the perfect amount of fantastical and weird to me mixed in with reality. It just invites you to imagine the the Marchpane Castle and the Christmas Wood with its lush descriptions. It would honestly be the perfect story to curl up with next to the fire on Christmas Eve.
