Le Maupassant des grands jours, des histoires assez lestes qui, dans la veine de Boule de suif, évoquent des paysans trousseurs de filles, de plantureuses noces normandes, des quincailliers de province que le démon de midi pousse à d'infructueuses tentatives de viol dans des compartiments de chemin de fer. Mais aussi " La Peur ", " La Folle ", le Maupassant qui en quelques pages touche le fond du cœur humain dans ce qu'il a de plus pitoyable ou cruel. Il n'est guère de portraits de la haine comparables à celui qui dans " Saint-Antoine " oppose un soldat allemand et un fermier du pays de Caux, et " La Rempailleuse " est peut-être la plus belle histoire d'amour que Maupassant ait jamais écrite.
