You know, I like to read Joe Lansdale..... sorta. His writing is SO GOOD. But some of the characters he writes about are not nice people, and it's uncomfortable to read about them. And some of his situations are kinda horrible, and make me unhappy? And Mr. Lansdale is totally willing To Go There if the plot or character(s) demand it. So yeah, I read him - occasionally. With breaks for unicorn chasers. (Though, TBH, I think I read two Hap & Leonard books in a row before I had to stop and take a break.) __________________ I finished this last night. I gotta say, yeah, it was violent and bloody. There was mayhem. And it had a better ending than I expected! It's as good a coming-of-age story involving a boy, a midget, a hog, a big mixed race guy, some whores, and an ex-sheriff that I could hope for. It was still a fairly rough ride for me, because bloody violence, but I did quite like it.

Joe's writing has such a lyrical, easily spoken sensibility that he makes this whole book seem effortless. Which isn't true: pulling off genre work as memorable as this is no mean feat. You owe it to yourself to read this if you like Westerns, or if you just like coming of age stories that linger.
