A Thousand Splendid Suns

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

One of the most emotional books I've ever read. Beautifully written and with the most realistic characters. This is the type of book you can suggest to anyone because it's impossible not to like

The book had me bawling practically every few pages, it was touching and made me feel so many types of emotions that haven’t been reached by other books since. it truly is a beautiful book and one that i wish i could read again for the first time again.

“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls” Wow… not only is this book beautifully written, it also gives a deeply moving view on how women were treated at the time before and during the Taliban taking over in Afghanistan. It was utterly heartbreaking, and I was so able to connect with the characters. I wouldn’t have usually picked up a read like this, but I’m glad I have because it has really opened my eyes.

Amazing - I 100% recommend, even if it’s not the type of book you normally go for

But, mostly, Mariam is in Laila's own heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns.

Boys, Laila came to see, treated friendship the way they treated the sun: its existence undisputed; its radiance best enjoyed, not beheld directly.

“Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. You remember that, Mariam."

“She is the noor of my eyes and the sultan of my heart”
