This one had moments of true tension that I haven’t experienced with many of the other books. The mystery element was very engaging because I’m at the point where I need to know how this conspiracy has led to everything we’ve seen so far. Also, Sunny growing up and starting to speak actual words?? Okay girl!

Are characters are once again put into unfortunate circumstances, but this time it's a doozy. Violet and Klaus are sent rolling down a mountain in a vehicle with no brakes while Sunny is held in the clutches of Count Olaf and his posse. Violet and Klaus end up finding the VFD headquarters, but it has burned down. Meanwhile, Sunny discovers her talent for cooking when Count Olaf makes her do all the chores for his troupe, including making meals. Violet and Klaus discover someone they thought was dead really isn't. Sunny uses her cooking to send a signal to her siblings. Klaus and Violet divide and conquer when Violet and the undead somebody decide to climb the mountain and follow the signal, whilst Klaus stays behind to decode a secret message. Violet and the undead somebody end up kissing on their way up the mountain, despite having only met that morning. Sunny meets two people so villainous even Olaf appears to fear them. And our heroes struggle with the age old problem: if you do something wrong for a good reason, is it still wrong? LOVED this book. Can't wait to finish the series.
Can't wait to read the final three books of this series!

The beginning of this dragged, the middle was EPIC, and then the very end dragged up until that last couple on lines! 4 stars for the plot twists that happened alone! Also because Sunny’s character development made me so happy. And a certain something something that happened with Violet.

I'm so glad to be in this world again. I just really enjoy everything about this series. Now, I do know what happens in these last couple of books as I've seen the show so these books don't really have surprises for me. However, a thing I loved in this book is that we're at the middle of uncovering the mysteries of VFD. A lot of things got revealed in this book but a lot of new questions are raised as well. We also got to really see how much the Baudelaire's have grown since the beginning of the series. I also really liked how we saw the kids question their actions and morals, which added so much more depth to the series. I can't wait to continue and learn more (even though I already know where this ends up).
I'm actually surprised to see so many reviews calling this book boring? I thought there were so many things happening? :D Spoilers ahead: (view spoiler)[ Sunny really develops her own speciality, we find out more about VFD and that Quigley survived the fire (and not a parent), we get to know the man with a beard but no hair and the woman with hair but no beard - two villains who are actually scarier and more threatening than all the others, Count Olaf's troupe starts to split up (and I'm pretty sure they were also fire victims), Olaf'and Esme "adopt" Carmelita and their relationships cracks as well, and we have one of the closest escapes yet. (hide spoiler)] I really enjoyed it!
I liked this book, through for me it's getting a bit tiresome before answers are revealed. However, I once more enjoyed the things the Baudelaires went through.
