** spoiler alert ** This book really spoke to me. It’s rare for me to give 5 stars to a chick lit book - they’re usually fun and light and easy to read but forgettable. This book, while being fairly light and fun and easy to read, really hit home for me in certain parts. Sadly not the dating a movie star part but the sections where things went wrong for our main character. Spoilers below: Edie starts the book by making a huge mistake. A massive mistake. And to me, the way Mhairi McFarlane describes the fallout made me really feel like I was in Eddie’s shoes. While this specific situation has never happened to me, I have made mistakes where I’ve wanted to shrivel into a ball and never show my face again, making me worried to go back to work and face the music. Edie made me relive situations in my own life where I made mistakes (granted nothing close to this, but still moments when I felt like I’d messed up!). There’s a section later on in the story when Edie sends a cringey drunken message to Elliot on a night out and when she wakes up in the morning, she is mortified. And again, the author made me relive this experience (and I’m sure my texts at times have been much worse than what Edie sent - why does drunk me think it’s ok to send messages? She should not be allowed near a phone). I actually felt Eddie’s shame and mortification. One of the other parts that really stuck out for me was her friend Nick. He’s split from his wife and she has managed to convince their son that Nick doesn’t want to see him, left him, has no interest in him and the court system have allowed this to happen and the father and son now have no contact. THIS IS AWFUL. This made me feel so awful for Nick and for any man or woman out there who goes through this. It’s unfortunately a lot more common than we imagine and having spent time with a male friend who went through something similar, it’s fantastic to me to see a woman author touching upon this topic with a degree of accuracy and also sensitivity. The man isn’t always the bad guy. In all, the main romance is alright, the storyline is fun, but it’s the way the author writes and the way she makes me feel as well as bringing up topics which aren’t discussed enough from that perspective in my opinion. A top notch read.

So, so good! Possibly the best book I’ve read this year. I picked up this book as a quick read and not expecting much and yet I’m ending it on a mission to hunt down everything the author has ever written. It was witty, funny, emotional in so many ways, and each and every character was so dynamic. But *sort-of-spoiler* please tell me there’s going to be a sequel?! I was far from done reading about Edie and Elliot and how can you just leave it like that?! A wonderful read and I can’t wait to read more from Mhairi.
