I do not mean the opportunistic pleasure that two people experience in encountering each other when they think the same way about certain things at certain moments of their lives, when they share the same tasks or the same needs...”. വർഷങ്ങളായുള്ള അന്വേഷണമാണ് ദീർഘമായ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ചയ്‌ക്കൊടുവിൽ അയാൾ അവസാനിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അയാൾക്ക്‌ വേണ്ട ഉത്തരം ലഭിച്ചു എന്നാണ് കഥയിലെ സൂചന. അയാളുടെ ചിന്തകൾ പക്ഷെ വരുന്നത് തന്റെ ബുദ്ധിയുടെയും ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെയും വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ സുഹൃത്ത് അന്നവിടെയില്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പോലും അയാളാ ഉത്തരം കണ്ടെത്തുമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അയാളവിടെയുണ്ടാകുന്നത് വൃദ്ധന് പ്രധാനമായിരുന്നു. ആ അനുഭവം കൂടി പങ്കു വെയ്ക്കുവാനുള്ളതായിരുന്നു അയാൾക്ക്‌ സൗഹൃദം. Wise ആയ ഒരെഴുത്തുകാരനു മാത്രം എഴുതാൻ കഴിയുന്നതാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ഈ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ. നമ്മുടേതിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായൊരു തരം മൂല്യവ്യവസ്ഥയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ എഴുത്തുകാരനായിരുന്നു Márai എന്നതും സുവ്യക്തമാണ്.

Long winded but I was hoping they would lead to a more profound moment of discovery or realization and dont feel like we ever really got there.
