It was honestly just an okay graphic novel. I did love the art style but not a lot happened and what did was pretty predictable. I don't think I will be continuing on with the series.

Overall I'd give Sleepless (as a whole, both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2) 3.5 stars, but I have no issue with rounding it up to 4 stars. I'm a sucker for this setting: Medieval-inspired fantasy featuring magic, royal families, political drama, and a diverse cast with a black female lead?? Absolutely my kryptonite, I would've read this even if it was trash. But it definitely wasn't trash! The plot was a little basic but competently handled and much enhanced by the characters, who were all likeable and distinct from one another. I even found the villainous characters to be compelling. The art is CUTE, very clean and aesthetically pleasing, which is very important to me when reading comics/graphic novels. If I hate the art then I find it hard to make it through the story, but the art here, done by Leila del Duca, was very nice and attractive and made this a joy to read. I LOVED the romance here. It was believable and I found myself shipping it right from the start. It probably helped that the romantic tension was established going in and I wasn't forced through some sort of insta-love plot. And who doesn't love a princess and her knight? My main issue with this series was the pacing, and is the primary reason why I could not give this a 5 star rating. Things felt too slow in the first few issues, then picked up pretty well near the end of Vol. 1, but then Vol. 2 came around and it felt far too fast. This series definitely could have benefited from a greater length; between the main plot, the world-building, and the political/royal family drama there was a lot packed into these two volumes that I feel could have been fleshed out and handled better with more time. I also felt that the question of the morality of the royal class should have been addressed with more depth, but in the end we only really got one or two lines about it, which irked and disappointed me. But oh well! It wasn't perfect but I still really enjoyed it.

I liked this. The art was majestic, very character driven plus the political intrigue is just the icing on top. I would have been so mad if I was reading this in real-time and had to wait for the next arc.

This fabulously immersive, romantic dark fantasy comic series, collected in two graphic novels of which this is the first, has a seductive medieval setting full of shadows, court intrigue and multiracial characters, stepping way outside the Arthurian white-dominated mode of the genre. Lady "Poppy" Pyppenia, is the illegitimate daughter of the recently deceased king, and is anxiously awaiting the coronation of her uncle and a long-overdue visit from her mother, who lives in a neighboring kingdom, to figure out what her new role will be at the court. Poppy's loyal manservant, Cyrenic, belongs to an elite group of soldiers, the Sleepless Knights, who take an oath under a magical spell to permanent wakefulness, never sleeping while on duty to the crown and thereby shortening their natural life. In Cyrenic's case, he has been bound by Poppy's father to serve and protect Poppy specifically after she survived an assassination attempt when she was a young teen. Now three years later, both Poppy and Cyrenic are unsure about the changes that will come with the new king, his sullen, scarred daughter Princess Rellen, and her handsome and distinctly creepy cousin Lord Helder who has aspirations to the crown for himself. Poppy and Cyrenic's feelings for each other have also changed, despite Cyrenic's vow and the fact that no knight who has taken the Sleepless vow has ever broken the vow or survived the final sleep at the end of their service. A series of attempts on Poppy's life brings Cyrenic and Poppy even closer together, while casting doubt and suspicion on the new Princess who treats Poppy with total disdain. Could she be behind the assassination and poisoning attempts this time? It will take all of Poppy and Cyrenic's will to navigate the increasingly treacherous waters of the new king's court, as well as surviving the strong undercurrents of their feelings for each other above and beyond their official roles and duties. Highly recommended for romance and historical fantasy readers ages 14 and up.

It was so cute! This little graphic novel was very interesting, and I was surprised, cause I haven't heard much about it before reading the first volume. I'm glad there was a happy ending to this story.

Ohhhh I really adore the artwork for this series. I think this series is staying as is but I would read a million more volumes of this and be happy the whole way. Poppy is cunning and so wholesome and Cyrenic's love for Poppy is beautiful. Just I love it.

3.5 stars. A bit disappointing after how much I enjoyed Sleepless, Vol. 1, but I still liked the art style and characters. Nothing new was introduced to the storyline here, it was simply a wrapping up of everything set into motion in Volume 1.

Really enjoyed this! Beautiful artwork, interesting concept and characters. This volume ends with a very dramatic scene, and I was invested enough that I immediately picked up Sleepless, Vol. 2. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with that one (although I still liked it) - maybe my expectations were too high. Still, I recommend the series.
