The Book of Disquiet is one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. Written over the course of Fernando Pessoa's life, it was first published in 1982, pieced together from the thousands of individual manuscript pages left behind by Pessoa after his death in 1935. Now this fragmentary modernist masterpiece appears in a major new edition that unites Margaret Jull Costa's celebrated translation with the most complete version of the text ever produced. It is presented here, for the first time in English, by order of original composition, and accompanied by facsimiles of the original manuscript. Narrated principally by an assistant bookkeeper named Bernardo Soares - an alias of sorts for Pessoa himself - The Book of Disquiet is 'the autobiobraphy of someone who never existed', a mosaic of dreams, of hope and despair; a hymn to the streets and cafs of 1930s Lisbon, and an extraordinary record of the inner life of one of the century's most important writers. Fernando Pessoa is Portugal's most important contemporary poet. He wrote under several identities, which he called heteronyms: Albet Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis, and Bernardo Soares. He wrote fine poetry under his own name as well, and each of his "voices" is completely different in subject, temperament, and style. Em 8 de março de 1914, aos 25 anos de idade, o poeta português Fernando Pessoa teve um insight e, naquilo que ele chamaria mais tarde de 'dia triunfal', criou seus três principais heterônimos; Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis e Álvaro de Campos. Deu-lhes, além do nome, uma biografia, um biotipo e, sobretudo, uma obra e um estilo poético únicos. Trata-se do único caso de heteronímia de toda história da literatura universal. Álvaro de Campos era, segundo Pessoa, 'o mais histericamente histérico de mim'; era engenheiro, usava monóculo, e o poeta escrevia sob o seu nome quando sentia um súbito impulso de escrever não sei o quê. Campos é o heterônimo da modernidade, da euforia, da irreverência total a tudo e a todos, cultuador da liberdade, sedento por experimentar todas as sensações a um só tempo e profundamente influenciado por Walt Whitman. De sua lavra são os célebres versos de 'Opiário', 'Ode trinfual', 'Lisbon revisited' e 'Tabacaria' - este último considerado dos mais belos poemas da língua portuguesa.

Après le succès considérable de la première édition (parue en deux volumes en 1988 et 1992), nous présentons aujourd'hui une nouvelle édition du Livre de l'intranquillité, entièrement refondue, revue et corrigée. Cette nouvelle publication bénéficie en effet des modifications importantes apportées par le chercheur Richard Zenith lors de la dernière édition portugaise, parue tout récemment ; celle-ci rectifie les nombreuses erreurs de lecture de l'édition portugaise originale qui transparaissaient naturellement dans l'édition française ; elle comporte en outre de nombreux inédits retrouvés depuis la première publication au Portugal, en 1982. Par ailleurs, l'ordre des textes adopté ici diffère entièrement de l'ordre retenu dans la première édition, pour suivre celui de l'édition de Richard Zenith : cette organisation du volume est moins thématique, mais plus dynamique et plus fidèle, dans la mesure du possible, à la chronologie des divers fragments. Enfin, la traduction proprement dite a fait l'objet d'une révision approfondie par la traductrice elle-même, qui s'est efforcée de rendre, avec le maximum de transparence, la force poétique et dramatique du texte.
