She was born in Istanbul on September 30, 1936 to Mithat Yenen and Annelise Rupp (who later took the name Aliye). She attended Ankara University where she studied archeology. Later, she left Ankara University without graduating and pursued theatre and archeology at the University of Göttingen. She moved back to Turkey and she worked at the Cultural Center of the German Embassy and Ankara Radio in 1960-1961. In 1962, her collection of short stories, Tutuklu Perçem (Passionate Bangs), was published. She began to work at Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT). During the military coup on March 12, 1971, she was prisoned for eight months and accused of belonging to a left-wing organization. After she was released, she went on to a significant career writing novels, stories, and memoirs.
