Figure révolutionnaire messianique, Thomas Sankara fut le premier président du Burkina Faso, de 1983 à 1987. Il fit baisser la mortalité infantile, promut l'instruction, améliora la condition féminine et rendit son pays autosuffisant en essayant de le détacher de la tutelle des grandes puissances. Le discours sur la dette qu'il prononça à Addis-Abeba en 1987 est emblématique car il proposait de renégocier l'ensemble de la dette, jugée inique, des pays endettés du continent africain. Thomas Sankara sera assassiné quelques mois plus tard. Jean Ziegler, sociologue de notoriété internationale, rencontra le chef d'Etat à plusieurs reprises et devint son ami.
