The Warren

The Warren

Brian Evenson2016
X doesn’t have a name. He thought he had one—or many—but that might be the result of the failing memories of the personalities imprinted within him. Or maybe he really is called X. He’s also not as human as he believes himself to be. But when he discovers the existence of another—above ground, outside the protection of the Warren—X must learn what it means to be human, or face the destruction of their two species. The Warren is a new novella from Brian Evenson.

The Warren is a strange, twisting, unnerving read that never allows readers one moment of comfort. Right away, the stakes are high, and our POV character is incredibly unreliable. There are twists and mysteries as X keeps waking up as different people, with different memories and different motivations. As the narrative unravels and the resources at the Warren dwindle, readers even start calling into question whether X is even human. Though short, the entire experience is eerie and discomforting right up until the sudden, whiplash ending that some readers will hate, but others will adore.
