Star Wars The Force Awakens

I just don't care about Darth Maul and all his ridiculous "I'm so powerful no one can stand before me I always finish my mission" bullshit. The fact that Darsha and Maul had basically the exact same thoughts about mission failure was so annoying. Especially since neither of them would shut up about it. Darsha's constant "I'm gonna get sent to the agricorps if I fail this one mission" whining was enough to drive me batty. Obi-Wan's presence in this book at all was totally inexplicable and pointless. There just were no good decisions made here at all.

A good novelization covers all the story of the source as well as adds new material to fill in the gaps -- kind of like "deleted scenes" found on DVDs. Both of these get four stars in The Force Awakens. The action scenes are often too brief, and there could be more extras. We get a bit more of Poe on Jakku. Finn seems more competent and Rey's ease with the technology on Starkiller Base makes more sense. This is a good but not exceptional adaptation. I did get a thrill reading Foster again, 35 years after reading Splinter of the Mind's Eye.
