Although some of Hopkinson's works for children shine brilliantly, her two books on the Obama family, unfortunately, fall flat. In this book, the illustrator, AG Ford, appeared to have trouble standardizing his pictorial characterizations of the characters; from page to page, head size and other facial features varied disconcertingly. On the narrative side, the text about Michelle shone but only when describing her before meeting her future husband. Hopkinson's narrative shifts to the simplistic when she describes Michelle, always in relation, in the shadow of, her husband. I wish I could recommend this book.
