Five-carat Soul
In these short stories, "McBride explores the ways we learn from the world and the people around us. An antiques dealer discovers that a legendary toy commissioned by Civil War General Robert E. Lee now sits in the home of a black minister in Queens. Five strangers find themselves thrown together and face unexpected judgment. An American president draws inspiration from a conversation he overhears in a stable. And members of The Five-Carat Soul Bottom Bone Band recount stories from their own messy and hilarious lives"--

Enjoyable, often-surprising and thought-provoking collection of short stories touching on a wide variety of experiences. I don't think there were any that I really disliked (though also not any that I especially loved), but I did particularly like "The Under Graham Railroad Box Car Set," "The Christmas Dance," and "Mr. P and the Wind."

I read about half this collection and then I started reading another book. The stories I read were humorous and poignant. They were quite excellent. No complaints here. I just got the itch to dive back into sci-fi (my first love). These stories are definitively worth your time. I particularly liked the story about a boy named Abe Lincoln.
